Your issue sounds like a classic warranty issue, so why not just set up an RMA? Of course what you are considering would void the warranty, IMHO.

    Good luck.

Thankfully the N73JQ set to follow this soon looks like it has better port layouts. Squeezing stuff under the ExpressCard slot does not seem like a good idea!

Thankfully for Asus, but not thankfully for us - unless they care to exchange the new model for our model.

I think the way the ports were "placed" under the ExpressCard slot just made them especially vulnerable to being damaged. Ports centerd in the side areas have more fairly tough plastic above and below. I sent mine back primarily because it came with a loose HDMI port. The port itself wiggled a little.

(The other reason I don't want the N71 is because the one I received, an X1 version, didn't output 1080p from that flaky port. The highest setting indicated for the HD output was 720p, but my TV and the display panels where I work are 1080p. Couldn't get 1080p even with the newest ATI drivers.)

So...just ten minutes ago, I put in my order for the N73JQ-A2. Should be here in a week. From the pics, the ports are arranged very niceley--even a couple on the back. I just hope they don't wiggle!

Time for a new Owners' Lounge?

Still BSODing 116... ntbtlog.txt doesn't help at all.. all the drivers are latest from Asus site. Sometimes it will boot without the BSOD sometimes it won't what the F.

Sorry, Werewolf and all other owners, the way I wrote that about the ports being (possibly) improved on a later model was inconsiderate of current owners. I was thinking outloud.

If what I get is like every other laptop ever made, it too will have a list of issues. But that is for another thread...

I am back after being missing from here for some time.

Actually I was preparing for my PhD defense.
So now I have finished it. I have now earned a PhD degree as Doctor of Engineering.

It is true that the design of N73JQ looks nice, but I would still decide for N71JQ if I have to do the decision.

The Nvidia graphic card is weaker than the ATI 5730.
The new product should be an upgrade than the older one, but it is pity that ASUS did not use ATI GPU on this one.
Though the ATI 5730 was released 10 months before the Nvidia 425M but it is still a winner.

According to notebookcheck 5730 is about 16% faster than 425M: NVIDIA Geforce GT 425M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

I wonder why you were not able to get 1080p from N71JQ.
It could be some configuration issue together with your TV.

I am running my N71JQ Monday to Friday for 10 hours each day at 1900x1200 resolution through HDMI port without any single issue.
This is higher resolution than 1080p.

Now that i have been reading all the posts here i'm hoping Turbogear could maybe ask Ken Lee about this becasue i would really hate to RMA it and then get it back whitout it beeing fixed.

And why they have put the Hdmi and the usb under the express is to me not very understadable, i'm accutally scared of using the hdmi now because of this.
If the port is broken, it would be better to RMA it.
You may fix it yourself but most probably you will void your warranty by doing this except if you are a soldering expert.

Usually desoldering devices without leaving any traces is something for the experts and you need the right tools.

In the place where I work we have professional soldering station and a microscope and even then removing a device from the PCB and soldering a new one without leaving any traces requires some training.

If you leave some traces of tampering on the mainboard and then for some other reason you have to RMA your system in the future most probably they will not honour the warranty.

Are you using the latest drivers from the ASUS N71JQ page?
The drivers on the ASUS's N71JQ download page are quiet old.

You can try the latest ones from this site:
    ASUS N61JQ Driver Thread

This is the N61JQ driver thread, but N71JQ has the same hardware so you can use all the drivers from there except for bios file.
Let's hope the BSODs are due to some driver problem or some software issue. It could also be hardware related.

It could also be a good idea to try to install a fresh windows and then run it without any extra software for while to see if this problem occurs again or not.

Well, I received my laptop back from Asus. I sent it for a repair service on the HDMI port.

The Asus representative over the phone did not seem to be very knowledgable. I guess I am more technical than she was and did not understand many of the terminilogy that I used. I told her I had already updated the bios update and drivers for the graphics card while she still insisted that i run through some basic tutorials involving rebooting the system and going to the control panel. She also placed me on hold for quite a long time while she had to find answers through a manual. The total time I spent over the phone was nearly an hour before she gave me an RMA# to send the machine for repair.

As for the repair service, it was very poor. I received my laptop back without any resolution. They simply ran "tests" and stated that everything was fine.

    Letter received:

Your Notebook has passed all functionality test after being repaired by our engineer.
The unit is working fine and no trouble found. We installed Asus DVD and working fine.
Sony LCD, TV , HDMI test ok.

We ran the following tests: for RAM, HDD, WC, WL, BF, FK, BATTERY, SOUND, TP, KB, USB, CPU, GPU, WIN and all tests passed
We are shipping the unit back to you.
    Thank you,
    Ritendra Prakash

    Letter I sent back:

    Mr. Prakash,
So there were nothing that needed to be replaced or installed?
Below, you mentioned that the HDMI was tested on a SONY LCD TV.
I had included a letter with the laptop that specifically said that it did not work with a Samsung LED UN40B6000.

    Letter Received:

    Dear Mr. XXXX,

There was nothing that needed to be replaced or installed.
HDMI is good and should work with any external monitor.
Here is the FedEx tracking number 7939XXXXXX
    Thanks,
    Ritendra Prakash

As I said before, there was no resolution to my problem. The HDMI port is still defective in my opinion and does not connect to my television. This was one of the reasons why I bought this laptop and it disappoints me that I cannot use this feature.

    @phibaman

Can you please provide some more details about your problem?
Is the HDMI port not working at all with the TV?

If possible maybe try to connect your laptop to some other TV or monitor through HDMI to see if it works.

If ASUS says they tested HDMI then I suppose they did it and found it to be working except if they wrote that without actually testing it.

Im not convinced its hardware, no stress tests fail, no crashes on anykind of use or temps, no artifacts, no bad smells, no rattling components. Those drivers do look much newer by those dates, I will update and see.

    Already reformatted it twice.
