Re: Asus G71G Owners
Open the bay where the fan located with a csrewdriver. Almost all the fan is visible, but the fan ends are under aluminium cover, this is what makes the noise. Take slim screwdeiver and insert it between the fan and the aluminium cover. Put the middle of the screwdriver on your finger (otherwise you can break the fan) and push up the cover a little for all perimeter. It's perfectly solved my problem. Hope this will help you too.
Sorry for my bad english guys

Re: Asus G71G Owners
I guess since this is the "G71 Owner's Lounge", any question(s) okay? (Don't want to hijack, I mean...)
I bought an HP HDX16 awhile back, intending to use it for "light" gaming, but being a gaming newbie, and after doing some research (after I already purchased the HDX16, naturally), I realized there really isn't such a thing as "light" gaming. What there is, is "occasional" gaming (which would describe me), and "hardcore" gaming. (Simplifying for brevity here.)
IOW, a computer needs to run at a certain performance level to run games at an enjoyable rate (FPS, graphics quality, etc.). While the HDX16 is a very nice machine, HP rightly terms it an "entertainment" notebook, not a "gaming" notebook. My specs on it are:
-Core 2 Duo T9600
-4GB DDR2 RAM
-512MB nVidia 9600M GT
-320GB 5400rpm SATA HD
-16" Brightview 1920x1080p screen
-Vista Ultimate 64-bit
What I'm getting to here is, would the G71G-A1 (or -A2) be a better choice to dedicate as a gaming machine? I know the G71 has a slightly slower CPU, but a better GPU and faster HD (the HP didn't have an option for a 7200 HD when I ordered it). And ASUS is calling it a gaming machine.
I just have trouble when I look at a Dell XPS1730, and see a high price, coupled w/last year's Santa Rosa platform. I've seen a couple other high-end, high-priced gaming laptops w/older tech also. Do most laptop gamers not care about the newer platforms, only about such things as dual-graphics cards, RAID disks, etc.? Because I can't figure this out.
Basically, I want to dedicate one system to just gaming, so I can install and attach all the fun gaming gear I already bought. What do you all think--is the G71G the way to go? If so:
1) Should I get the A1, or spring for the extra $250 and get the A2? (The only difference is the 500GB vs. 640GB HD, right? 500GB seems like plenty, but you guys tell me.)
2) I was sort of ready to order it, and then I've been reading about this horrible fan screeching problem. While I don't have a problem cracking open the case of the notebook and adjusting the fan housing (which sounds like the problem, from what I've read), would that void the warranty? Or is ASUS more forgiving about that sort of thing, being an enthusiast's company? IOW, should I order now (while there's a rebate), or wait? The rebate's up at the end of the month, so I'd have to decide pretty quick.
3) Are there any other problems? I read about a "popping" sound coming from the speakers--is this happening to everyone, or just few?
So fill me in, guys: is the the low-cost gaming laptop I've been searching for?

@ oldcrank
The CPUs (T9600 and T9400) will have minimal performance difference when it comes to gaming. The most important component is still the GPU. Benchmarks may tell you otherwise, but in real life, a 300mhz difference is small potatoes. Keep in mind that the G71 can also be overclocked to ~2.7-2.8ghz using Asus's turbogear utility if you really feel you need the extra speed.
Dual graphics cards are nice, but it's high price doesn't really justifies its slight better performance. Again Benchmarks will show eye-popping scores, but most games in today's market still can't utilize SLI GPUs.
RAID is a feature that I particularly like and having that would be a nice added bonus. It doesn't really help during game play, but loading any software can be faster when the HDDs are set in RAID-0. Unfortunately, the G71G doesn't have that feature - only the G71V and G50 series does.
New platforms are always more desirable, and I'm sure Dell and other companies will have new models coming out soon.
1. I'd get the A2. Especially since it comes with a free 250gb external hard drive (only from gentechpc i believe). Another difference is that the A2 has a blu-ray optical drive.
2. I never had an issue with the fan noise. The only way to void your warranty is if you remove the sticker from the screw that holds the CPU/GPU heatsink down, so you should be fine in that department.
3. No sound popping from my G71G-A1. People have reported slight discoloration with their screens, but have solved it by applying pressure from the back.
All in all, it's one of the best budget gaming laptops to date. The brightness and contrast of the screen are also amazing. You don't often see dual-lamp LCD screens in laptops. They are usually more expensive and at this price range even I couldn't resist.Last edited by David; 3rd January 2009 at 03:47 AM.

Re: Asus G71G Owners
Actually, the cloud is solved by putting pressure on the screen itself - i.e., simply clean your screen with the included wipe and with light pressure, the cloud is literally wiped away.3. No sound popping from my G71G-A1. People have reported slight discoloration with their screens, but have solved it by applying pressure from the back.

Re: Asus G71G Owners
I bought this laptop (Asus G71G-A2) about a month ago. I had a problem which sounds very similar to the one quoted extensively on this thread. On booting the laptop made a loud noise and wouldn't stop for about 5 minutes. I think this link resolves the problem (well it did for me):
http://support.asus.com/faq/faq.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
It tells you to go into BIOS settings on booting which you do by pressing F2 alot. Then select Boot Settings Configuration, then Logo Sound Volume then choose Mute to disable POST sound.
I wasn't sure that this would work but now it no longer makes this loud noise so I assume that that solved the problem.

Re: Asus G71G Owners
may I ask if you can upgrade G71G GPU to the 9800GTS since the G70-SG's equipped with that kind of GPU? If yes, is there a big difference in terms of performance compared to the 9800GS? TIA

Re: Asus G71G Owners
Would also like to know this.
G71V-X2
Also have 2 problems I was hoping somebody would have then answers to.
FIrst is that my 2 left speakers constantly make static. It's only the left 2, and they still play music fine, just has this darn static. THe static carries over to my left ear when I plug in headphones as well, so I dont think it's the speakers. It's driving me crazy.
The other problem would be my online games. I love tf2, and get around 80fps on average, but for some reason whenever a friend brings over his laptop and hooks into our wireless, my laptop gets ridiculous lag. Frames drop to nothing , then the game comes back, then lag, repeat. He can play the game fine, we play in the same server, so I know it's not a crappy connection there. Is there an issue with the wireless that I'm not aware of?
EDIT: IT's the hotkeys, the bloody hot keys. WHY ASUS!?!?Last edited by SauerKraut; 5th January 2009 at 06:15 PM.
