Re: G73JH 5870m + ATI cats > 12.1 = uh-oh
If you have the latest Vbios go back and try what I said again you need to get it back to scratch so that a standard VGA adaptor installs at boot if it still says 5800 adaptor it has not worked you need to crap clean in safe mode. Go to the official website and download the latest driver full package and install from scratch. If 12.4 is not working try 12.3 and upgrade it to 12.4.
I am skipping it sadly. Its looks great and shows a lot of promise and improvement but they turned it into an Ipad and took away my start button.

Re: G73JH 5870m + ATI cats > 12.1 = uh-oh
Tried 12.6 a couple of nights ago...same crap as before, no dice.
Got power back a few hours ago...gotta love the U.S's mid-east weather...freaking storm brewed in minutes. Was told it went from 100+ F to 70F in 10 minutes.
Sprinting to my car, tornado sirens started up, along with 25mph+ winds...tried t escape the longer but quicker way...nope.
Power lines leaning at a 45deg angle are not good...especially for a good 1/4 of a mile along my 'escape' route.
Well, time to dig in and do the cc safe mode shuffle.

Re: G73JH 5870m + ATI cats > 12.1 = uh-oh
Crogge: No way to tell if the vBIOS has been updated unless you KNOW you've done it (maybe Radeon Bios Editor could tell you, I think...should be version 93).
Your computer BIOS is current, IIRC. NOT the same.
If you *DO NOT* recall making a bootable thumbdrive (flashdrive) and putting 5 files on it
(fixati.bat, fixOD.bat atiflash.exe and two .rom files) you are still on stock vBIOS which cause
the problems you describe.
G73Jh GSOD Vbios Update - Page 45
Had issues like yours 1st week of ownership...after vBIOS flash, worked grand, after vBIOS update with OverDrive, worked great and could overclock the videocard. 700Mhz core = default, most games stable at 750Mhz and can do gpu folding@home at 790Mhz.
Had the fans replaced and the darn thing came back at stock vBIOS (GRRRR).
Reflashed on the spot.
Now that I think about it, I may have to flash to default, install the drivers and reflash to OverDrive. I have a vague recollection that some ATI driver do not behave/install if OD is
active (OD ability in CCC is still there, installer just does not like seeing it active...weird, but deja vu is strong).

Well went all the way up to current from 12.1 using atiman's uninstaller.
Not happening at all...SoS (same old s*).
Well, this stinks.

Re: G73JH 5870m + ATI cats > 12.1 = uh-oh
Just updated to 12.6 a few days ago from 10.x (I forget). No problems so far.
On bios 211 and updated vbios (again, I forget. I think it was the one with "93" in the file name)
noticed a decrease in gpu utilization using hwinfo64 while playing mass effect 3 on max settings. around 5-10%.
straight installation. did not use driver sweeper, etc

Greaaaat, did a full reload and updates, and 12.6 installs w/o a hitch.
Now to get all the asus stuff back on (creative drivers especially) and working.
Joy!
