How about a G75VW owners thread?

This thread has been great for speculations and discussions on wether 660m was actually gonna match the performance of the 670m + upgrading possibilities.

The idea of the G75VW owners thread would be to guide owners through things like:

    - Clean install (the installation order for the drivers etc.)
    - Stock values on both CPU + GPU (both idle + under load)
    - OC values on both CPU + GPU (both idle + under load) + what apps to use for it + safe/stable values (i know this varies, but there is the rule of thumb etc.)
    - Adressing issues like the subwoofer being out of sync (full tone in stead of just the low amplitudes etc)
    - Upgrade possibilities for CPU + GPU (both soldered + MXM) on the G75.

What do u guys think? Would someone be humble enough to put some time and effort into the above?

PS. Pardon my French - I'm from Denmark.

rschauby amazed you got the G75. I'm still very much upset that Asus never fixed our vBIOS and never an apology either. Though the G73JH is still functioning, and everything still working, I think I'll jump ship and go with a Clevo 9150EM with the matte 95% NTSC gamut and 7970M. Comes out about same price as the G75.

There is definitely a problem with the audio (VIA this time) as the subwoofer is playing the full range of sounds and I can't even hear the tweeters on top. This problem is the number one posted and discussed on Asus ROG forums, so hopefully it gets attention and a quick fix.

The machine definitely does looks slick; it feels quite a bit sturdier than my G73, the keyboard and touchpad are FAR superior to the G73. The screen is matte, which is nice for reflections, but in the right conditions the G73 display looks a little better.

Yeah for $1500-1600 you can get a P150EM w/ 95% gamut screen and 7970m instead of a GTX 670m and relatively lame screen.... I'd never buy ASUS just because of how much cheaper a Clevo is; but the build quality is actually great on the Clevo; and its easier to upgrade RAM/CPU/GPU down the road; but you can't upgrade the HM series to 7970m ; but there is some hope in the future with a BIOS update. I got the rig in my signature for $1600 including the 256GB Crucial M4 SSD. After a 10% student discount :P

This was not always the case. The price of Clevo has plummeted since Asus, MSI have put a lot of pressure on Clevo. It seems you may be new to the high end/gaming laptops? Clevo used to be $2000+ and Asus few years ago had the best GPU at that time HD5870M for only $1400 and at the time one of the LCD panels. It wasn't until recent the 95% NTSC screens were made available at such reasonable price. It wasn't until recent that MSI/Asus have begun making gaming laptops to compete with Clevo for the mid-market, so even for mid-gaming rigs from Clevo were expensive, and for a while they were the manufacturer of Voodoo, Alienware and Envy.

Well I did say "I'd never buy ASUS just because of how much cheaper a Clevo IS". Not how much a Clevo was... I'm aware that they used to be more expensive; currently though they are the best bang for your buck. I prefer bang for my buck as I'm not made of money haha. If ASUS was better bang for my buck I'd probably buy ASUS; no fanboyism here; just prefer getting the most for my hard earned cash; as most people do [except apple fanboys who apparently have no idea what hardware actually costs and only care about aesthetics].

Has Asus ever updated a product line with newer graphics cards? Is it possible that Asus will make the 7970 available in the current G-Series computers?

Doubtful and highly unlikely they stopped producing high end or 256bit cards in their laptops after they kept being met with problems and the last one was the 5870M in the JH the cooling was great the heatsink was dire. They will probably stick with Nvidia mid range because it is cheaper to produce and causes them less problems and they still charge the price for high end equipment by giving it good looks and good marketing, and it sells.

Seeing the performance of the 7970M I wont be coming back now either I do not think Asus will return to the high end market because there is a need for mid range, I will be waiting for the 7990M however before selling my HM and picking up a PEM

Hearing that they are not including optimus in their models is plan and simple stupidity that would have been a win win for Asus.

I have the G75VW-DS72 Model for roughly Two weeks already and I can comment on the following:

    Clean Install:

Only Drivers from ASUS Website were installed

    Stock Values:

CPU on Idle seems to be around 30/40's. GPU on idle seems to be 40's and under some load 50+. I'll be testing Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl for GPU Temperatures using EVGA Precision X 3.0.2.

    Subwoofer Issue:

I uninstalled VIA HD Audio deck and I am not using the Speakers but Headphones. I noticed that the VIA HD Audio Deck would play from Speakers or Subwoofer even when Headphones are plugged in. I disabled the Speakers under Control Panel -> Sounds.

I cannot however comment on the OC or the Upgrade values.

there may not be a 7990m.

the 7970m is already based on the 7870 and even that is a huge feat, most people are thinking it isnt yet possible to make a 100w card perform at 7970 levels. The 7970 requires about 222 W of power when gaming. The 7870 under full stress only uses 161 W. The power consumption of the 7870 is only 72.5% of what the 7970 uses; or 37.5% LESS power used.

Going from 161W down to 100W isn't anywhere near as difficult as going from 222W down to 100W; they just take off a few cores/mhz, and can cut it down to 100W without much decrease in power; but for the 222W 7970 to be cut down to a 100W mobile GPU it would be seriously nerfed; the 7970m is very likely the top of the line for this year from AMD.

Nvidias 680m might end up being 10-15% faster at most; but really these cards are maxing out their architecture and using it quite efficiently.

We will have to wait another year or two to get GTX 670 desktop GPU level mobile GPU performance [i hope only 12-18 months and at this rate it seems very possible].

I just want to play unreal engine 4 games in 2014 on my laptop :P will have to upgrade GPU though thats for sure; the 7970m might play them on medium though; but for High/Ultra we'll need GTX 670 kind of performance....
