Default G73SW Blu-Ray optical Drive issue

I have been loading software on my G73SW-A1 for a while now using the optical drive. All of a sudden the drive isn't resonding or responds sporadically. Have there been any known issues with the BD/DVD drives. I did a search but couldn't find anything.

Here's what I did. I uninstalled the Drivers and later the entire drive fron "Device Manager" (the driver seems to be current as the computer doesn't find anything new) Restarted the computer and the drive/drivers get reinstalled. Some time it will work with a DVD movie but when I try to put in a data disc (software install) it won't recognoze it. Just sits and doesn't spin up. Using Acronis True Image I have restored to an earlier image (after Win 7 SP 1 was installed) and it seems to work all right on BD DVD's and standard DVD's but chokes on any type of softwat CD install. Then nothing will load. Don't know what else to do.

I haven't heard any recurring issues with those drives. If you've tried it with multiple drivers and a previous version of Windows, it seems like it may be more of a hardware issue at this point. I had a similar issue with my desktop when the optical drive would work sporadically. I went through the same process to no avail, but the problem stopped once I replaced the hardware. You might contact ASUS or your reseller to inquire about setting up an RMA.

    Thanks,
I restored to an earlier image and so far the drive seems to be working OK. Keeping my fingers crossed as this is a refurb unit.

Try cleaning the lens with the proper tools, they make a CD with brushes on it.

Is there anything strange occurring with your laptop aside from the DVD issues?

I would think that if nothing else has happened to your laptop, and if cleaning the lens and media doesn't help that your drive is likely failing.

Last resort before replacing the drive would be to try a re-installation of the OS and drivers to see if there was some kind of software bug.

Check out this thread for some things to try: G74SX slimtype problem, particlarly near the end of the thread.

I realize you have a different model, but these resolutions still apply.

    Thanks for reply guys,
Besides not being able to use bluetooth since i bought it and performed clean install,I dont have any other problems whatsoever. I carry and use my computer at work every single day,its on and running at least 10-12 hours a day .Past week or so my GPU temperatures went up for few degrees and today i cleaned the vents with compressed air and they instantly dropped down to normal 45C. I watch moves every once in a while and thats about it of using BR rom.
I will try to clean laser lens and see how it feels after.
Again what bothers me is that some disks are running normal and some not. I will do some research again tonight.
    Thanks for help!

    Reposting from other thread!
    Thanks for help!
I did try all of possible software solutions and ended up cleaning the lens with alcohol but non of that worked in my case. I believe it might be some hardware issue! I am away from US and cant go for RMA at this moment. I guess i will have to live with it till i dont push myself and perform clean install as an ultimate try to make it work.
    Again thanks for help!
