Re: What is the hottest my G74sx should get before I get concerned?
to be honest i have the g53jw and i could not be any happier i bought it for $1199 6 months ago, and i definitly didnt have a single CRASH or a single BSOD NEVER NEVER NEVER !
also the keyboard is just awesome, by just touching the keyboard it makes you feel that it is the best keyboard in the world, what ALIENWARE ? i admit that alienware look nice and stuff, but some COLORS IN the KEYBOARD also the MSI colores makes it retarded to pay an extra $500 to get it seriously ?! you care about the colores ? i mean whats wrong with the white color on the asus g series ?
also every company have some bad laptops, and i would say you just got unlucky with the laptop you had the (g73jh) and i am sorry for that, but belive me that could happen to alienware too, just get an rma or something .....
asus is awesome company and i love it !Asus G53JW-XN1 Intel Core i7 740QM 1.73ghz running @ 1.84ghz, 12GB DDR3 RAM, Intel WI-FI 6200 Card, Nvidia Geforce GTX 460m @ 814-1600-1628 ,intel SSD 80GB + 500GB 7200RPM HDD.

Re: What is the hottest my G74sx should get before I get concerned?
You obviously have never seen an Alienware keyboard, and it has nothing to do with colors. And it's sad you think Asus keyboard is the best in the world. Sad for you, you've never used a nice keyboard before. Asus keyboard comes nowhere close to the level of quality provided by Alienware or Lenovo for example.
You also are completely ignorant of the issues for G73jh and apparently that people had keyboard issues with your model as well and touchpad. ROFL the G74SX just had a new Bios to fix it and there is already a thread about missing keys.
You may like your laptop but it's very obvious you are clearly not able to make a comparison between Asus and Alienware or even be able to judge my G73jh. This is clearly can be seen when you are oblivious to that fact the keyboard on your G53 is the same as the one used by the G73jh. My issues with G73jh keyboard have nothing to do with white lights, ROFL. It's insulting to even suggest that.

(that if you didnt even already knew that the clevo/msi/alienware were better) ?Asus G53JW-XN1 Intel Core i7 740QM 1.73ghz running @ 1.84ghz, 12GB DDR3 RAM, Intel WI-FI 6200 Card, Nvidia Geforce GTX 460m @ 814-1600-1628 ,intel SSD 80GB + 500GB 7200RPM HDD.

Re: What is the hottest my G74sx should get before I get concerned?
Usual answer is because its cheap. Or cheaper, than the other offerings with an ATI 5870M.if you are such a fan of alienware why you bought the g73jh ? or even thought of buying an asus laptop ?
Owners of the first generation JH (and not a refurbished, or cheap 2nd/3rd hand models but an actual full price JH) can't be faulted for lack of research as we sat through the most bizarre crop of issues (Fn+Esc freeze, PSODs that heal automatically, revisions of the card that just run hot because its red, floppy touchpad behavior and missing keystrokes).
Half of you accepts the fact that you paid a lower price and the issues with such a 'cutting edge' laptop come with the territory, and for the most part its true; but then we opened up the innards and discovered handiwork befitting of chimpanzees when it came to the thermal paste and heatsink installation.
You see, this is coming from G73JH owner who is living in the desert with a non-repasted, non-overheating, G73 complete with flawless touchpad and keyboard. But being around here since day one, I don't dismiss the issues others have with their G73s. The current crop of G-series laptops are flawed beyond measure. (with them fitting a non-upgradable 560m in their latest iteration the biggest flaw.)
On top of it all as you are a 460m owner, I don't think you can judge the state of disappointment we JH users feel when we compare our semi-gimped 5870M to the others on the market that perform better, cooler and overclock higher with WORKING FEATURES like Powerplay and a more complete vBios.
I supposed with the sheer amount of money you pay for an AW (given its popularity and reputation) Dell is obligated to help with queries but tis a weak argument. Most of us paid substantially for our JHs too. And even more in time loss, and time troubleshooting.
I love my G73. Without a second's doubt. I love it beyond measure. It works when I throw everything at it, has zero issues (lol be jealous every one) stays super silent, is light enough to be used for chest topping, and looks so damned good. In fact, so good I recommended the G53 to a pal of mine who needed a gaming laptop. He RMA'ed it twice.
But I had the funds I would have gone all out on a Sager (most likely no until I fix my need for backlit keyboards) or AW (until I can haggle the price down for the config I want to below 2.5k), and again, coming from one of the few, lucky G73 owners.Asus G73JH

Re: What is the hottest my G74sx should get before I get concerned?
Stick with the AW. It's much easier to maintain, take care of and in the future next year you can upgrade it. And you won't have the problems the current G74 users are facing.
The build quality of an AW just blows away what Asus offers. Not that I need anything more, this plastic machine has held up without any nicks or dings so far.

Which manufacturers would you guys rank in order in terms of build quality, and cooling?
Is Alienware really ranked first in terms of build quality and cooling?

Re: What is the hottest my G74sx should get before I get concerned?
Overall yes, Alienware is hands down the highest in terms of quality.
Overall beefiest cooling system would have to go to Clevo.
For best quality models, I'd have to go with HP EliteBook 17", Lenovo W70x series, and from Dell, the Precision series. Those are the three very best notebooks IMO, the best industry has to offer for professional level hardware.
Asus like MSI provide decent hardware specs at an affordable price. For the price I'd say the quality from Asus and MSI is good. But that's why you pay more for an Alienware or Clevo. But as I also said, you don't need an aluminum chassis (Alienware) or a full copper heatsink (Clevo). Cooling in the Asus is adaquate and the plastic holds up, unless you plan on playing drums on your laptop.
But for my next high performance notebook, never going Asus again. They just don't care, they entice you with decent specs and price, but that's all you get. All their notebooks have endless issues that are never resolved and the company couldn't care less.
