Re: How to Fix Your GSOD Blues
My GSOD occurred after a windows upgrade, including Silverlight, I ended up doing a system restore and upgraded again with same result(id all that remove thing in safe mode ec with driversweeper, ati crap removaller and ccc and reinstall with 11.5), I redid all the above again but stopped silverlight upgrade and now fingers crossed no GSOD.
(GSOD only while on high gpu load temps never over 80c)
Is it possible that microsoft upgrades/ silverlight is responsible.?
It seems all the other candidates vbios/drivers all have their enthusiasts but no one seems to know completely as to source of GSOD.
BTW I havn't flashed the vbios.

Re: How to Fix Your GSOD Blues
Are you pressing ESC key at power on? Does the stick show up as an option ? If NOT :
First try entering the BIOS (f2 at power on) and F9 in bios to reset it to defaults.
If this does not help, power down, plug in the USB stick, power up and enter BIOS, Boot TAB - add boot option then add the USB stick. Save reboot.

Re: How to Fix Your GSOD Blues
Hey peeps,
Thx for a great forum and thread!
I´m a happy Asus G73Jh owner with GSOD blues. Here is my system:
G73Jh
vbios - 012.017.000.004.035992
Bios - 206
Catalyst 11.5
When I play COH Eastern Front or LFDead2 the computer shuts down - sometimes with black screen other times with grey/white lines. Is overheating the issue or is my comp. outdated with old drivers/bios?
Any help much appreciated!
Thx,

Re: How to Fix Your GSOD Blues
soerenkepler, I would start by installing a good temp monitor, Hwinfo32 has the ability to log temps while in game HWiNFO, HWiNFO32 & HWiNFO64 - Hardware Information and Analysis Tools
IF you stay below 100 C (hopefully well below) you are ok.
HAve you flashed the VBIOS yet?
I have and mine shows Version: 012.020.000.032.038352
You will have problems if you are on a recent Catalyst with an older VBIOS.
PS I am not getting any BSOD.
Let us know your temps, in game and at idle: but even if the temps are good I would recommend updating the VBIOS - IF you are unsure how to do it ask first, a rare bad flash can brick your G73.

Re: How to Fix Your GSOD Blues
Soeren, Your Idle temps are on the high side, but in game temps are not high enough for thermal shutdown. What is your ambient temp? Mine is around 50 C with ambient 27 C
Also a great idea to diassemble the computer and clean it AFA dust, etc.
^^^ , first i would update the BIOS to 213 (current) the fans will turn on sooner.
If you look at the op in the thread we are using now, it tells you how to update VBIOS in general terms: (but some of the driver versions are a bit outdated)
See Beta's catagory for the latest versions here for latest versions
G73 Series Driver and Application Reference
thanks to Chastity for this thread!
If you need more help let us know, any flash of either BIOS or VBIOS can brick the computer in rare instances.

Re: How to Fix Your GSOD Blues
Thx you´re too kind.
1) Not sure what you mean with ambient temp. so I´ve attached a jpeg of my temps.
2) Haven´t dust-sprayed it yet but will once I can buy a can of compressed air on Monday. Any method I need to be aware of?
3) Does it make a difference in which order i do a vbios/bios update? And - do I have to flash the bios from 206 to 213 (or 211) in order to do a vbios flash? I´m using catalyst 11.5 with stock vbios 012.017.000.004.035992, which might be the cause of the problem.
Forever thankful,

Re: How to Fix Your GSOD Blues
Glad to help,
1) Not sure what you mean with ambient temp. so I´ve attached a jpeg of my temps.
Ambient is a fancy word for room temp.
2) Haven´t dust-sprayed it yet but will once I can buy a can of compressed air on Monday. Any method I need to be aware of?
Yes there is a thread here with great details, I believe you remove the back panel . HOld the fan with long tooothpick and spry into the rear vents, if you do not want to disassemble. ( Total disassembly is not that easy but there is a video YouTube - BTOtech.com | G73Jh & G73Jw & G73Sw Disassembly Take Apart G73 g73jw service manual
3) Does it make a difference in which order i do a vbios/bios update?
NO the order does not matter, I did BIOS first and made sure it booted up properly, then did VBIOS a day later.
And - do I have to flash the bios from 206 to 213 (or 211) in order to do a vbios flash? I´m using catalyst 11.5 with stock vbios 012.017.000.004.035992, which might be the cause of the problem.
SPOT ON, I think you isolated the cause, No you do not have to change the BIOS in order to do a VBIOS flash, but 213 fixes a few issues (I would say all the experts here are on 213); not that I classify myself as one, I am just a long time owner that loves fixing laptops!

Re: How to Fix Your GSOD Blues
Thats very helpful thx!
1) I live in Denmark - summertime here is about 22 deg..
2) Have seen the video about repaste -look pretty intense but do-able. If its a solution to my problem then I´ll go that way.
3) Flashing bios: Can I go directly to 213 or should I take each update 1 at a time till I hit 213?
Flashing vbios/bios: Just to make it pefectly clear. The vbios/bios work independently - ie - each can be updated without having to update the other. Ie - bios 206->213 will work with any type of vbios, and can be flashed in any order. Correct?
Thx,
Soeren
