2/14/10 Vantage Run: I don't know what it is about my GPU in Vantage, but I'm having a hard time getting my GPU score to match up with others using the same clocks. The weakness in score is from GPU test 2. The good news is I appear to have a high threshold for OC's, but clock for clock against the rest, it is falling short. My best run so far is P8921 with a GPU 874 and MEM 1200. The scary part is I seem to have more headroom
. Steady 70F ambient.
Where these high clocks do seem to have a linear effect is on the 3 Unigine benchmarks (those are beautiful benchies). They do heat up my GPU more than Vantage, so I don't expect to hold an 874x1200 on them, but will try later.
I haven't seen any artifacting at this point and no BSOD's.

2/20/10 Vantage Run: with 10.3 preview drivers
Attachment 45523
2/15/10 HAWX Benchmark Run: i.e. Video Settings/Test Performance (Avg. 3 runs per clocks) NO Asus Easy OC, Steady 70F Ambient
Setting: 1920x1080, NoAA, Vsync Off, FS On
Advanced: High, High, High, High, On, On, On
DirextX 10: High, High, High, On
Stock 5870 clocks (700x1000): Avg. 42 FPS, High 107, MAX GPU Temp 76C
OC 5870 clocks (800x1100): Avg. 46 FPS, High 84, MAX GPU Temp 79C
This benchmark is a good one for DX10.1 Ambient Occlusion. I used an OC setting that most people should be able to use, it barely increase the high GPU temp by 3C and is worth the FPS bump when all the fireworks are going off. Any level of AA causes skipping (Vsync On or Off, Benchmark and Gameplay), but does not affect FPS.
The benchmark is a run in Rio, you'll get different FPS for the different terrains, for example, with the OC clocks I get FRAPS showing an avg in the high 60's flying low and into the sun on the Ghost Rider mission in Mexico.
Final Impression: G73JH is an excellent laptop for HAWX, just don't use AA (it's still great looking) and go ahead and bump up your 5870 clocks (it's effective). You can also go Very High where applicable without much of a FPS hit.
UPDATE with 10.3 Preview Drivers: Huge 230% increase in FPS. With stock GPU clocks 700x1000, I now get 97FPS 200HIGH and 115FPS flying low and into the sun on Ghost Rider mission.
2/26/10 Update:
oops, 230% was too good to be true. I must have made the mistake of not selecting DX10 starting the game and therefore ran in DX9. With the 10.3 previews we get Avg. 46FPS and 141HIGH and that's upping the Ambient Occlusion to Very High. Still, a real good increase.
2/27/10 Update: Added video with 10.3 drivers and stock GPU clocks.

2/25/10 Cinebench 11.5 Benchmarks: This is a 2 part video of some Cinebench 11.5 CPU and OpenGL tests with Asus Twin Turbo On & Off. If you are interested in rendering videos or images, or do encoding with the G73 i7 720QM, this video can give you some insight as to how it will perform. As far as Asus Twin Turbo, the difference is heat. Mandrake has provided CB 11.5 920XM scores of 3.73 @ 2GHz and 5.40 @ 3.2GHz OC in the Benchmark Thread, which provides a nice jump on the 720QM apx2.88 score.
In video part 2, I display 95% completion screen shots of rendering a 5min 55 sec. 1080p video down to 720p using VideoStudio x3. I have uploaded the screen shots on NBR below the videos.
Part 1:
Part 2: (if you only want to spend 5 minutes, watch the first 5 of this part)
Note the FSB (a.k.a. BCLK) and the i7 Turbo multipliers of the Argus Monitor (thanks to Mandrake for showing me that program). Also the CPU temp readings.
Attachment 45758
Attachment 45759
2/25/10 Dirt 2: In this video I use two separate, but same track Dirt 2 races to compare runs with stock GPU clock 700x1000 and an OC 800x1100 using the 10.3 preview drivers.
The OC race & replay gets the full screen and parts of the stock race & replay are overlaid in the upper right corner. I think you'll enjoy it.
This next video is my first Dirt 2 on a London track. It is with the stock 9.12 drivers that come with the G73 and stock GPU clocks.
This is a video of the same London track, but now with the 10.3 preview drivers, 8xAA and a GPU OC of 800x1100 (It is not recommended that you constantly run your GPU OCed for gaming).

Re: Asus G73 Benchmark Thread
Back story: As of earlier today I'd read every post in the G73 thread (parts 1 and 2) so I've been keeping up on the drama. I ended up canceling my order with PNB (which made me sad) in order to get an X1 since my current laptop is 4.5 years old and not long for this world. The X1 arrived earlier today and I wanted to benchmark it in sheer excitement. I'm a casual gamer, my gaming crowd is older fellahs who have wives and families just like myself (8 mo old twins!), so I have not put a lot of time into OC'ing or benchmarking or really any of the hardcore side of this pasttime.
Relevant question: So long story short, I ran Vantage and 3dMark06 on the brand new X1 and got atrocious scores. I'd love suggestions on what I can do to improve the performance of the system.

Re: Asus G73 Benchmark Thread
Scores are slowly creeping up. Twin Turbo drops total vantage score by 20-40 points, wth?
I am approaching 9000 and am hoping to hit it on this next run.Originally Posted by Stealth bomber W :

Re: Asus G73 Benchmark Thread
Not positive, but I don't believe so. It's not a true image from what I remember from my G50vt. You can stop it at some point and just have the fresh OS install and then pick and choose. Once again I'm not certain.
Found this.
Not sure if they changed how they do things though.
