Re: G51j Blue screen of death problems
I don't think Nvidia is to be blamed about the heat but the laptop manufacturers, there are laptops that run extremely low in temps with the same cards (sager and alienware). People always want something faster, and imo they have supplied really good gpu, specially lately for laptops, although i do hate the renaming, these gpus are miles ahead for what was available in the laptop world 5 years ago.

G51j Blue screen of death problems-THOUGHT
I'm a relative newcomer to mobile chipsets and laptops in general but i was thinking: the g51j a1 and the alienware m15x have basically the same components(CPU,GPU,Chipset...).The only difference seems to be the the software and the BIOS. (m15x doesnt have any BSOD issues). Would it be possible to flash/install the m15x's BIOS on the g51 and test it? (is this even possible?) . This would clear the BIOS as a possible cause of the BSODs...

Re: G51j Blue screen of death problems
im pretty sure its not possible. The BIOS's are specific to the motherboards that is in the system, unless AW uses ASUS MOBO's, then probably not.

Re: G51j Blue screen of death problems
About 16 hours of intensive gaming and no single BSOD.
AA x 8 always on, Anisotropic filtering x 16 etc.
It looks BSOD 124 issue is fixed for me.

Re: G51j Blue screen of death problems
What "heat issues"? Nvidia got hit with a manufacturing problem back on their 65nm chips if I'm remembering right (similar issue that the Xbox 360's GPU's been plagued by, and unforeseeable). They fixed that though with their next process, and I've heard zero reports of any issues with new GPUs. And it wasn't a heat issue. I mean of course any big piece of hardware is going to get hot, it's up to the notebook maker to make sure it's ventilated well enough. That's exactly the same whether we're talking about hardware from Nvidia, Intel, or AMD.
What did you do that might have fixed it?
At any rate, regarding the GTS 360, again, 16 fewer cores, but almost certainly faster core speeds. Half the memory bandwidth, but faster RAM...end result shouldn't be that much different, and I'm all for a die shrink.
And the person saying the GTX 260 is marginal...for what? I mean I'm sure you can't max out every single thing in every single game, but a 32 core Nvidia GPU will run todays games perfectly well.

Re: G51j Blue screen of death problems
BIOS: 204

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen

Product: 768_1
Well gentleman, I finally got my first BSOD 124 error. I have played Dawn of War 2 for 12 hours straight with no BSOD, World of Warcraft for roughly 7hrs per day for 1 week straight with no BSOD. I finished Bioshock in 1 play through with no BSOD. I played Team Fortress 2 for 6hrs straight with no BSOD.
I played Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer for 3.5hrs with no BSOD and then I kept the gaming running through the entire night. After 6 hours of Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer running there was no BSOD, when I woke up the next morning there was a nice BSOD Recovery message on my desktop. Sometime during the night, CoD 4 MP gave me my first BSOD. I'm going to post the dump file below.
This first BSOD is enough for me to reformat to XP right away. I'm not going to wait for another one. I bought this lappy for $1650 CAD after shipping to play games, same as everyone else. I can't play my favourite shooter confidently so I'm really upset. I wish I could return it even with a restocking fee but I'm past the return date unfortunately.
I also realize I've been running on the pre-installed 204 BIOS but obviously 205 hasn't fixed a single issue with anyone so I see no sense in trying it now. XP here I come! I hope it works...PC Whipped!
