Default Looking for a LV or ULV Core Duo or Core 2 Duo.

I'm seriously considering assembling my own whitebook laptop (the Compal HEL80 is looking really foxy), but I don't want to put a standard voltage proc in there.

Can anyone direct me to where I might be able to obtain one of these?

Those are so bloody expensive to buy one at a time- p4 and core LV and ULV chips are really really hard to come by in the 'civilian' channel. I think intel may have actually decided not to offer them as retail or semi-retail units and deliver them only by the tray

Maybe one of the sites that sell barebones systems can offer you one? I'd at least try asking them, I'm coming up dry on getting them without buying a tray at a time as a wholesaler =( You'll probably wind up buying one from them at something of a markup....

BTW- have you considered buying a 'dead' laptop and harvesting its processor? Something like a sony with a busted screen and a ruined hard drive and a dead GPU that you can confirm has a good CPU still in it. Not the best idea, but that's what I could think of this late.

Aren't LV and ULV chips socketed onto the motherboard and so cannot be upgraded/replaced?

Not always, that's usually just a compromise in design so they can shrink another 1/2 inch off the chassis thickness. I've seen ZIF-socketed (or similar mounting) LV chips on several occasions.

EDIT:

Wikipedia has two pages:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors
detailing the core lineup-

physically the chips have the same footprint, and the same pinout. The standard (T) and Low-Voltage (LV) should be socket M. The Ultra-Low Voltage (ULV) chips may be different, I haven't seen those yet but I would assume they adhere to a standard socket M design, perhaps one designed for low-clearance installation. Again, not 100% sure on that.
