Default T41 Pausing issues

Ok I myself use a T23 but both my bosses and others in the company are starting to get the T41 models all with built in wireless and the basic 512meg of RAM. The thing i can't stand about the T41's that we have been seeing is there is a pause every so often, sometimes more then others, for anywhere from 4 seconds in duration to over 10 seconds in duration. We tried bumping up the RAM with an extra 256 megs of ram (of course by replacing one of the default 256 sticks with a 512) and still no avail. The pauses aren't constant, but man they are enough to keep me from even considering one. Have any of you other T41 owners noticed anything like this? I doubt it's the hard drive anti-shock mechanism seeing as how the laptops are all sitting idle on a desk, or even in the docking stations this is happening. Anyone please help?

I gave a nice long response, but this site ate it... so you'll have to forgive me for skipping the logic and just giving the bullet points.

1) Research the hard drive protection more (i.e. disable it/enable the real time display of it)

2) Defrag, let the machine run idle for a day, watch the taskmanager, it may just be windows optimizing itself, something about the t41's, they don't ship very well optimized so Windows grabs 100% CPU a few days after it starts up to do the optimizations.

Running Windows XP? What kind of pause? Whole system locks up, ie. mouse cursor and all? Or do you just mean a Windows-style, not-responding-even-though-I'm-clicking kind of pause? What other software has been installed since new?

As above, try disabling the HDD shock protection altogether. Also try updating it - a new version was released and I find it stops/starts a lot quicker now. I'm using mine in a dock on my desk right now and if I bang the desk, or bump it with my knee, it'll stop & start, but never in the range of 4-10 seconds though, unless moving during that time.

Sounds like a Windows issue regardless.

There is a new update to the Active Drive Protection software/driver, which now includes more flexability in setting the sensativity.... check IBMs support site to download the patch.

There's also a bug in the battery maximizer which will occasionally cause the system to freak out and use all the CPU.

It masquerades in the task manager as rundll32.exe.

You can either uninstall the power management software or download a tool which will allow you to kill the process.

is a good one.
