Default Thinkpad G40 capabilities

Hey everyone,

in the market for a laptop and was strongly considering a G40 with around 3ghz and 1gb ram. Am looking more as a portable desktop rather than mobile computer, so battery isn't a huge issue. Work I do is software development with a large component of digital video work potentially.

I like the G40, but the graphics card isn't doing much to compel me to buy. The grunt of the 3ghz seems to be important but would consider stepping down.

Alternatively have looked at the HP nx9010's, NEC Versa M400's, and a few of the ASUS models.

Will be travelling overseas and staying for extended periods, so extended warranty and worldwide support is rather important which is why I was leaning to IBM, but still have a few quibbles.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated

Cheers,

Pete

Sounds good for that. I wonder if noise & heat is an issue though. It seems to have a huge fan on the bottom of it (huge compared to other models, anyway). I wouldn't want that thing buzzing & burning & blowing right in front of me for hours on end.

So long as it's all 2D, editing video clips etc. then the Intel graphics would be fine. Not sure about Intel's graphics drivers though; they've been a bit flaky for me in the past. Just IMHO.
