Default Upgrade/swap shared video card

I'm interested in the Compaq r3030us but don't like that the 128 mb ati video is shared memory with the 512 mb system ram. Can I later purchase and install another dedicated memory video card and if so, how and which one do you recommend ? Also, would i have to disable the inetgerated/shared video memory in order to free up the 512 system memory and if so how do I do that ? THanks for any tips on this.

This must be one of the most asked questions in any notebook forum. And the answer is unfortunately NO you cannot upgrade your GPU (yet). There are a few exceptions to this rule with some notebook manfactures offering upgradeable GPUs, (eg Alienware). But here you are locked into the alienware upgrade.

The other problem currently is that although some of the new GPUs like the ATI9600/9700 are "upgradeable", unless you are a notebook manurfacture your chances of getting hold of a new GPU chip are next to none. That is you cannot walk down to your local computer supply store and pick up a new GPU and slot it in. Even if you could, it is not a simple process, will proably void your warranty, and there are other possible problems with different power requirement etc etc between new and old models.

However after all this bad news, here is a small ray of sunshine. As recently posted in this forum and on many tech sites, Nvidia has just anounced a new standard for mobile GPUs called MXM (http://www.notebookreview.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1943).
So hopefully in about a years time most notebooks will be fitted out with a MXM GPU and allow for notebooks to become a little more like a desktop, and have easy upgradeablity.
