Default "Catastrophic Failure" while creating Restore Point

I got this message while trying to create a Restore Point today:

I searched this error and found some information on Microsoft's Help and Support site but I'm not sure if my error is really related to the SQL server ODBC driver.

Anyone know a fix?

Fresh install? I dunno, but I've always found Microsoft's vague, unsolvable "errors" to be a pain in the a**.

Set aside a couple hours on a weekend, pop in the Vista CD, update drivers, and see what happens.

Good luck.

There's got to be some other way right? I wouldn't mind a clean install too much but I have some concerns about validation of Vista then...but still, any other way?

Maybe you can restore the system to an earlier time and see if that fixes the problem?

I just tried but it says that there is a problem with the Volume Shadow Copy Service...

Ok... maybe you can use the reliability monitor to check the changes that you made to the system before the error occur.

I just checked it and everything is a success with exception to explorer.exe stopping twice, and quite a few of DllHost.exe-stopped working...

SQL, ODBC?
What exactly did you type in google, or MS support directory?
I think that the 0x8000FFF part is just telling you where it ocurred, but what it was deppends on OS, and such. I doubt you are using Windows Server, so it's probably not SQL / ODBC related.

Try this link:
http://www.computing.net/windowsvist...orum/1531.html
The guy in that thread turned off Vista's Shadow Copy Service without realizing it, so he was getting your error(or at least a ver similar one).

If you keep searching microsoft, you will find this:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...37ed63da0e&p=1
Basically, no answer.

Also try this:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...not+be+created
A few minutes looking at it you will find this link:
http://www.wintechhelp.com/vista_system_restore.htm
containing the following info:
Quote:
Cannot Use and/or Launch System Restore
The System Restore utility might fail to launch and may exhibit error messages such as the following:

Unable to locate component

This Application has failed to start because SRCORE.dll was not found.

Re-installing the application may fix the problem.

System Restore does not appear to be functioning correctly on this system

Catastrophic failure (0x8000ffff)
Cause
Any of the following could contribute to this issue:

An application is interfering with System Restore.
One or more of the core System Restore files are missing and/or corrupted.
The Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) has been disabled. System Restore depends on VSS volume snapshots being created via Shared Protection Points (SPP). System Restore cannot function if snapshot creation via SPP breaks or is disabled or if VSS is disabled.
Resolution
To resolve such issues, use these steps:

Try to use System Restore from WinRE, Safe Mode, or Windows Vista in a clean boot state. If that fails, proceed with the next steps.
Check for the following files in the %windir%\system32 directory:
Srrstr.dll
Srclient.dll
Srcore.dll
Rstrui.exe
Follow the "Restoring Core Files" section later in this document. You might want to follow the instructions in that section to reregister Srcore.dll. Keep in mind that you are not able reregister Srrstr.dll, Srclient.dll, and Rstrui.exe as doing so produces an error message.
Check that Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is not disabled.
Check for either of the following registry keys:
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore
If you find a DisableConfig DWORD set to 1 in either of these keys, export the key and delete it.
Try System Restore again.

I dont know how SQL is related to Vista, but I know its a part of Visual Studio 2005 which I installed, so I am going to uninstall that and restart and then see what happens.
