Default Shipping a notebook to Canada

I'm going to be shipping a Sony SZ to KITCHENER, n2p 1r2, CANADA with a declared value of 1400.00 and delivery confirmation via USPS or UPS(Haven't decided yet) but both will be around $35.00. Now my question is I'm pretty sure there's some kind of form I need to include for customs, does anyone know a way I can figure out about how much I will be charged in custom duties or whatever it is? Also any tips when shipping international? I know the person so no worries about a scam.

I think you might have to pay the GST tax on the $1400, but not sure.
Maybe check the Customs website?

Yeah, I believe I read on about.com that theres a 6 percent charge and plus 8 dollars to clear it or something. I might just declare it at a little bit lower value.

Is there any way around the fees? ;/

Has anyone shipped to Canada, if so what's the process like?

Ship via USPS because UPS charges ALOT for their so called "brokerage fees", while USPS only charges tax.

I second this, UPS ALWAYS charges me a brokerage fee. Most of the time it is higher than what the actual item is worth.

I work for Canada Post and if you declare it as 1400 your friend is going to have to pay a decent amount. It may range anywhere from 8%, to 15%, as Ive seen from my experience.

The laptop is a gift so I'm gonna have to pay any fees. I also read somewhere that some kind of tax isn't charged on laptops. What does the tax percent depend on? His in Kitchener, Ontario. I think I'll end up declaring it as 1200.00, I know the company I work for does some "tricks" to help save their customers on fees, etc so I'm gonna ask the shipping lady for her recommendations tomorrow. Anyone else?

The declared value of a gift maxes out at '$60' IIRC, so theres no point marking it as a gift if you declare it as more then $60.

Duties aren't paid on goods made in America when taking them back to Canada. As for your taxes, if they consider it a foreign made good then you just have to pay GST+PST from my experiences.

Private shippers like UPS and FedEX will most likely add "custom clearance" charges of 50$ on top on collecting the GST from the receiver. However, if you ship via US Mail, the package will pass to Canada Post and those custom clearance costs shouldn't be collected (but GST will)

People say go the usps route. UPS and fedex charge pricey brokerage fees while USPS charges 5 dollars.
