Re: New M17x R4, M14X R2 and M18X R2 are coming - Speculation thread.
I think my POV is unbiased since I'm not really an AW owner yet
I just thought its not comparable.
I guess that means comparing Dell to other consumer brands, their quality is not doing good. Maybe that's the reason too why Dell is trying to make their Tech Support really good.
I didn't really read the whole article, I went straight to the charts
But the sample size is also important in getting these percentages. How many Apple owners are there compared to AW users? Or compared to other regular laptops?
Let's say there are 1000 apple users in that data against 200 AW users. Just and example. Apple repaired 100 units and AW is 50. That's 10% for apple and 25% already for AW even if their numbers are lower.
I dont know if I'm making sense here lol. I'm just trying to add another example why its hard to compare.

Sadly I had to replace my M14x motherboard twice. Something I've never done in any of my previous 10 or so laptops. There seem to be more posts on the alienware subforms about dead parts than on any other sub forum that I browse.

Statistics is a tricky thing. Even if you conduct 2 similar surveys in the same neighborhood, same time and using the same criteria, you will get 2 different results. I'd completely disregard those numbers, guys.
Don't forget, most AW owners "know how to mess" with their beasts, lol. Benching, OC'ing, repasting, etc., all goes way beyond what would an average joe do to an average consumer machine. I myself opened my M18x ~15-20 times to the level of CPU/GPU swap. And with the M17x my actions resulted in 2 cases of warranty service in the past
So, even though I never had a faulty machine, I contributed to the negative statistics. What about those infinite cases of dead-from-overheating machines as a result of improper care (just put it on a blanket and run Furmark, anyone?
). And how about those who exploit the warranty to get free upgrades??
Bottom line: take my word (I've sold and serviced a bunch of AW, Clevo as well as business grade machines in 2011) for it, AW is very reliable if you are a reliable user. If you know how to care about your beast, it will most likely last quite a few solid years. The M18x in my sig is one of the most reliable laptops I have ever owned. Zero issues in almost a year and not a single replacement except for CPU/GPU upgrades and downgrades (back to stock now).Back to square one....

Re: New M17x R4, M14X R2 and M18X R2 are coming - Speculation thread.
we already know what is coming
M14X R2: same design-body ivy bridge cpu possibly gt640m or 650m same screen
M17X R4: same design-body ivy bridge cpu GTX660m-GTX675m-HD7970m same screen
M18X R2: same design-body ivy bridge cpu GTX660m-GTX675m-HD7970m I hope for better screen 120HZ 400nit or RGB-LED but those are dreams
conclusion: no redesign body,no m17x aluminum body,no other colors same red and black, same Edge to Edge glass on the screens no option for matte screens, no RGB-LED screens, boring

Perhaps alienware has something that hasn't been leaked yet who knows. I hope they come up with something to stay ahead of clevo.

Alienware is ahead of Clevo for at least 2 or 3 years on design and features so no worries there
