Why is the ODD useless? A lot of things still come on discs...

Currently my desktop is in the shop and I don't need it now, but I would love to have the chance to break in it before next school year.
Are you going to be at the wall with power plugged in most of the time? If so get the R1, the main difference between the r1 and the r2 is that the r2 will last longer on battery, and have maybe 20%-35% more graphics power. You will not see a noticeable CPU performance increase as Intel has focused on the IGP and battery life in ivy bridge.

There is not much talk regarding a new m11x, do you think that it will be released in the same release window as the other systems. What gpu could they use for it? 630m perhaps?

Word is the GTX 660M will be at a 50W TDP. That's definitely doable for the next M14x.

I expect it to be the GT 650M or 655M.

It won't be a rebranded chip, which is what everything in the 630M range is.

I will be able to plug in fairly often between classes, and probably in class as well. So you think 20%-35% isn't that much, ok. I saw a chart for GPU classes in the future and I am VERY interested in the codename "Maxwell" GPUs now. That is the GTX700 series I think. It doubles in efficiency from the GTX500 series.
old: blue Dell Inspiron 1420 - core 2 duo processor, some very low nVidia graphics card, given to sister

    new: Asus N55SL - i7 2670qm, GT635m, 8gb RAM, 750gb 5400rpm HD, external speakers included

For those of you who are familiar with Dell/Alienware pricing, will the new laptops be priced the same as the current laptops?

    Thanks

Should be in the same range give or take.

The 630M being the new 555M could be accurate. If their desktop cards carry the same philosophy as their mobile ones, then the 700 series is going to be very powerful. It's rumored that the 770 will outperform the 7970 by at least 30%, never mind the 780. Now, this happens before every launch - things get blown wildly out of proportion (and it could be argued I'm just adding fuel to the fire), but who knows?

The GT 635M is literally the rebranded GT 555M. Dell will not reuse that for the next M14x.
