    Default M17X or M15x.........

    I will be recievieving my refurbished M15X tomorrow (specs below)

    HOWEVER...I think I may want this one

    * Alienware M17x Laptop
    * Processor: Intel Core i7-820QM Quad Core Processor 1.73GHz (3.06GHz Turbo Mode, 8MB Cache)
    * Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
    * 250 GB SATA II Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
    * 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz (2 DIMMs)
    * 8X DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability
    * 1 GB ATI Radeon HD 5870

    The cost difference would be less than $200

    The reason I wanted a 15 is for the smaller size but I am reading it is not that much smaller than the 17!! I like the 1080 screen resolution on the 15 but at those sizes I doubt the human eye can tell the difference,

    The really intriguing thing I like about the 17 is the better processor and Video card.........and the price (after 20% off) is only $1263!!!!!!!

    Refurbs are great computers as Dell US goes through them when they are returned from the original owner who recieved their "new" and possibly flawed one from Malaysia. I have three refurbs the oldest being a Dell8600 and they all still run.

    Dell 1500 series refurb

    All STILL running well..

    Might I suggest, you accept the refurb since you get the 21 days full factory replacement warranty (USA) right?
    Test, test and retest and make the decision if the m15x will perform for your needs.
    It sounds like you might be second guessing yourself, you found a great deal, both of them actually, let time decide.

    Great advice but there is only one 17 with the above specs and They may waive the restocking fee considering I did not open the box (of course they would have to give me the same coupon discount offered last Friday when I ordered the 15 which they may do since I am paying more and upgrading....If not I will keep the 15 and be happy...I would not buy a 17 with my 15 specs.

    I guess the GTX 260 issues have me a bit spooked. I know people are getting throttling issue running at 4X 100% and really taxing the machine but I read of none with the ATI card at any test. You have great specs. How do you like your GTX card? IS yours a refurb as well?

    I like my M15x, very much. Avatar, in BRay was 'near 3D'. Both the current and replaced are awesome. The replaced AW ( I fried the mobo on CC from Resource Disk) was actually shipped back 100% functioning since I had put the replacement request in before the tech showed up.
    OK, I have not throttled/ overclocked any part of my laptop, yet. I do serious video editing (thus extra ram) and online investing, multiple windows (lots of multiples, hehe) and haven't found a need for more performance.
    I really like the ability to upgrade, soon, and watched the tech take apart the replaced 15 twice. Looks easy enough.

    IF you do get a full warranty, like new, you do get 21 days from invoice full refund/ replacement without restocking;

    "Restocking Fees: Unless the product is defective or the return is a direct result of a Dell error, Dell may charge a restocking fee of up to 15% of the purchase price paid, plus any applicable sales tax. "

    Hmmm not good....I would be returning an unopened box....my bad for ordering the "wrong" unit. Well if the don;t waive the restocking fees then it would cost me another $160 and that would not be worth my time of the additions the M17X would offer.

    I too use Street Smart Pro for online trading but would like to have a machine that could run FSX at a decent frame rate.

    waiving the restocking fee isn't a big hassle, however I would *never* return a computer back to dell just for the sake of testing it out. I've been waiting 40 days so far for my return credit, and there are a lot of people that have been waiting longer.

    yeah, my DPA credit was only a few business days, the credit for my American express however is not so quick. Im on the verge of filing a dispute, there's no excuse for 40days.
