I wanted to see WUXGA on a 15 inch but of course nobody carries it. Figures.

Most monitors these days are widescreen, which makes a rare resolution like UXGA even rarer.

It's just the typical dumbing down offered by all companies specialising in gaming centered hardware. Whether it's "gaming" headphones, or stupid flashing LED's etc. They're marketing towards school-kids instead of the real meat and veg' of the community.

I e-mailed Alienware about this and they came up with such a bull**** explanation.

They say the reason the WUXGA is called 1200p, is because the software will upscale the 1080p format to the 1200 physical pixels, BUT they don't do the same with the WXGA+ because even though it does the EXACT SAME THING to 900 pixels, they say because it can't do 1080p, it can only be called 720p because 900p isn't a recognised format.

! Neither is "1200p" you schmuchs.

I hate the way gaming is cool and acceptable nowadays, and aimed at socially backward children with all their special gaming headphones, gaming keyboard and gaming socks. I preferred it in the days when it was still classed as nerdy.

I also agree. Blatantly rewriting a naming standard to fit your own marketing hype is way out of line! 1200p should only mean 2133 (or I'll accept 2130) X 1200.

I never thought that I would be so dissatisfied with a company due to moral outrage (well, except Microsoft that is )!

hang on, it is 1200p meaning that ALL lines are shown at once that is all it means. They are within their rights to call it that. The only reason your so familiar with 720p and 1080p is that it's a buzz word atm from the movie industry as the standard met by the forums for High Definition and Full High Definition formats. 1080p is native resolution on Blu Ray discs meaning a screen that has 1080p will display "dot by dot". 1200p is possible as its a progressive screen capable of showing all pixels at the same time instead of an alternating interlaced standard.

The 'p' and 'i' is a suffix used in video broadcasting standards. It is not indicative of hardware. There's a difference in saying something like a computer screen is "progressive scan" (which is obvious, and provides no useful information), and taking the vertical pixel count and sticking a 'p' at the end of it to make it look like a video standard.

We have a High Definition TV, that is a piece of hardware capable of displaying 720p AND 1080i video standards. To do this the hardware needs a minimum of 720 physical vertical pixels, and the ability to display video in progressive scan and interlaced formats. If it can do this, then it's 720p and 1080i ready/compatible etc etc
If it had 768 vertical pixels for some reason, it wouldn't be a ""768p"" TV. It would still be a TV capable of showing 720p and 1080i video.

720p 1080i and 1080p are NOT buzzwords. They are video standards. "1200p" is NOT a video standard, it's a made-up combination of numbers with a suffix to appear in the same formatting as a HD video standard.

WHICH EVER way you look at it, either the "720p" display should be called 900p to be consistent, or the 1920x1200 display should be advertised as being able to show 1080p video, just as the 1440x900 is advertised as being able to show 720p video even though it has 900 vertical pixels.

here's my thought on this...

its their marketing strategy to call it 1200p whether its true 1200p or not its debatable... but i think its easier to call it 1200p than wuxga, because most people (average joes) dont know the term wuxga, wxga, etc, they only know 720p and 1080p thanks to the movie industry...

now, when they say 1200p, isnt it easier to tell the difference than say "900p" instead of wuxga and wxga... numbers are good for all the non-techie people! althou i doubt nobody who owns alienware doesnt know anything about computers... well maybe its for those parents who dont know anything about tech terms and wanna buy it for their kids, etc, basically its just their marketing system!

maybe they wanna reach those people more now, because so far alienware is known only for the gamers, computer savvies, the geeks... maybe using "1200p" is easier to understand than using the word WUXGA...

now, if ur upset because its misleading, well, are those people really care about what exactly the resolution for 1200p is? i think all they care about is that theyre screen will be better than 900p! if you care so much then, just say it as WUXGA and you will be fine, why bother get upset with people who say it as 1200p...

right now am furious n mad not because of the "1200p" or "900p" but because they delayed my freakin lappy coz they said the monitors are backordered!!! aaaaarh! check on the other thread for this monitor backorder story!
