    Nope.
Desktop chips are barely making it above 5.2 ghz.

yes there are some great skills here and many just waiting for the time to bench and post some scores.

On the ivybridge mobile there may be some validations towards 5.4-5.5ghz but that's just a guess and handling in benching and real world use just a small step above SandyBridge... Overclocked extreme edition wise... Otherwise ivy will have sandy beat on base clocks... But overclocked there won't be out of this world jumps over this generation.

How is it that a laptop chip is able to be overclocked to almost the same frequency as a desktop chip, John? Your 5.2Ghz is only 431 MHz away from being on par with a desktop overclock speed. Is this being compared with a similar desktop chip, like the 990x? I know the 3960x is not a huge improvement from the 2960xm, seeing as it's biggest feature is 6 cores, not four. But who the fudge uses 6 cores any ways?

The 3960x is a desktop chip and its one strong beast Conkers@ Tech Inferno has one and it scores some nasty numbers. The 2960xm doesn't actually come near the 3960x in any heavy load or bench. Desktops still reign as king and its still apples to oranges in the computer world... Its beautiful to see mobile platform so fast and so furious but no way are we close to the true max of a desktop CPU... And sadly its only due to heat dissipation in a small form factor being incapable of keeping up with desktop cooling solutions and ultimately the biggest is the supply voltage even on these unlocked extreme mobile chips are limiting the ranges we can get since as John pointed out... to go much farther then has already been benched requires more voltage than can be supplied so 1.5v core won't get us farther than you've seen and ivy bridge XM will no doubt have a max voltage as well and as these mobile form factors go and die shrinkage we may see a max volt core lower than the 1.5v of sandy extreme mobile.

    That's 5.26 ghz on 2 cores. Quite a bit a ways from 8 cores.

As to desktop chips....These are pretty darn close. And in allot of cases...better. (First Gen I7's)

They def hold their own, that's for sure.

They definitely hold their own they can probably beat most of AMD's line up too =) just noting under optimal overclocks on mobile and desktop from same Gen.... The desktops win but given fair comparisons such as both on air cooling they can almost beat some of those desktops like John said they more then hold their own. Stock clocks 980x vs 2920xm the 2920xm beat it in most except highly threaded high load apps... So even under an overclock its even better for mobile do yeah mobile XM has been a rocking scene. Night Brother John my system should be here in couple hours then it will be time to see what kind of chip they sent. Gonna stick to stock paste this time around at least on CPU since last time only 1/3 repastings had better temps then stock the others were extremely worse. Dell did say they are using a very good thermal material.

Alright got my refund issued on that fake 2920xm..too bad PayPal is holding the funds for another 3 days! Went ahead and bought a 2920xm QS from a reputable seller for $500. Hopefully it gets here quickly from overseas. In a couple weeks I should also be able to get my hands on a 3920xm for review purposes.

Didn't deal with Shirley, he didn't seem to reply to inquiries I sent him. Found someone equally as good who gave me a nice media discount + sending me 3920xm samples.
