Upgrading m18x cpu to the 2920 xm
Mine came with a dual piped HS yes but I didn't order through dell

Lol. There is a guide up here and on T/I that is super helpful. So is Aikimox's video for action shots. My suggestion is to use Post it notes, put the screws head down on the sticky part and label where they are from underneath. very easy to keep track of that way.
And no, there is no overvolt or anything. I happen to have very good 6990s, and pushed and worked them incrementally to get them where they are, also used Hwinfo for fan control. I OC'd my 2630 by playing with the power durations to max turbo boost and increased my Bclk to 107.48

Can't wait to get some new records with this 2920, but its goign to have to wait til next week. I am away for the weekend.
It Looks like the grill on the second heatsink is a little bigger ...
The main difference that i could see aside from the 2 pipes on the dual pipe HS ... is that the Grill on the single pipe looks/feels like aluminum ... not copper ... and the dual pipe the grill is copper.Alienware m18x, i7 2920XM OC @ 4.5GHz , 8GB HypEr X 1866MHz RAM, Dual 2GB Radeon 6990 X-Fire @ 880/1195 , 3DMark Vantage: 30325 Crucial M4 128 GB + 320GB 7200RPM HD

That is correct, it's alum vs copper but the size of the grills is the same.

Upgrading m18x cpu to the 2920 xm
Yea I meant the difference btween the 2 pics ... the 1-1 and the 1-2 heat sinks... the 1-2 looks like a slightly deeper heatsink ... BUT ... that might just be the angle and lighting of the shots ...
PS ... I would recommend anyone ordering a Non-Xm CPU to ask if dell will put in the 2piped HS ... I must imagine this would make a nice temp difference with a normal CPU but would also cool overall GPUS temps as well.Last edited by katalin_2003; 4th January 2012 at 04:28 AM. Did you notice drops in your GPU temps as well ? or did you not establish a baseline enough before ?

Re: Upgrading m18x cpu to the 2920 xm
hrm ... thought just by adding the extra copper and that heat grate there would be a difference in dispersion ... esp on GPU 1

Re: Upgrading m18x cpu to the 2920 xm
The one shipped in my current M18x extreme heatsink is a FCM 1-3. All others were 1-1, 1-2.
Not sure what bearing that has on anything. It did weigh ~2 grams more on the scale (47g vs. 44-45 for the others and felt more bottom heavy towards the exhaust then the others.
One thing I noticed about the 1-1 was the dual copper pipes have a noticeable space between them (in the pic above and in one I saw physically). You will also notice the 1-1 where
the dual pipes are connected to the copper exhaust they are not flush to the edge but pushed back a bit.
Here is my M18x CPU heatsink FCM 1-3:

Re: Upgrading m18x cpu to the 2920 xm
In Australia, I bought it for 63.80AUD includes tax and delivery. (dell told me it was 90 something in the fist place, but I lied to they said I called earlier and the price they gave me was 50 something. The staff looked again and give me 63.80 for the lowest she could offer). In USA, I think I saw someone saying that is lower 50 USD.
