In fact, I can only see this NOT working out for Dell in the short-term as even though they may have dropped a IvyBridge compatable mobo in the R2, who wants to buy one and THEN have to fork out to upgrade to IB!! - BONKERS! - those people are gonna put off buying until they can do so WITH an IB cpu...not buy a system that they have to upgrade.....Dell should have just waited till they could offer it up to everyone who wants IB.
Actually it's not that dumb. This is the exact mobo and components needed for an IVB system. When they refresh it with IVB they won't have to change the assembly line at all except switching the snb chips out for ivb chips. So it costs them basically nothing extra to get the IVB refresh in mass production.

Plus it allows them to get the IVB version out faster since the bulk of the notebook is already designed for it.

Yeah, thats all well and good I guess. I was meaning for those who want to (or were hoping to) buy NOW with an IB cpu, they cant....so basically, no point in ordering a system with an IB enabled mobo and a SB cpu only to have to upgrade the cpu when the processors are officially available.....you wouldnt buy a Lamborghini now and then swap the engine out! LOL

[Adding my reply from the Dell thread]:

Though the R2 seems to be nearing completion - please note this is my personal prediction, not a statement of fact - I'd like to see a 1.5TB standard dual-HDD option (2x 750GB) instead of 1TB (2x 500GB)... for some truly rediculous reason, manufacturers won't make a 2.5in 7200rpm model for laptops which actually holds data better than 5400rpm, and the cost increase is negligible.

As an alterantive, perhaps a larger cradle where there is the possibility for a single 3.5in, 2TB or 3TB storage option, and then holding 2.5in drives by an internal cage.

you will probably never ever see a 3.5 inch harddrive in a laptop, that thing is HUGE

Unless you want AIO desktop size thickness, 3.5" are HUGE drives.

As a prospective M18x owner, I would like the ability to have 2 x mini PCI-E slots for possible RAID 0 mSATA SSDs, 3820x2000 screens when 4k screens come out, possibly RGBLED/IPS options as well as the ability to have a bottom plate design like Clevo so you don't have to strip apart the entire notebook to get access to the CPU.

Well.. you get 3 HD Bays now on the M18X. So.. some improvement there..

But a 3.5" drive would add a LOT of weight, take up a ton of space.. power, etc.. noise.. Better as an external.
