Because 90% of the people here don't care about the option that runs "perfectly fine" when a much better option is available at a proportionally negligible price increase.

Then why spend the extra money on a 2920xm? You could have saved at least $550.

Well technically for the OP it was a free replacement. Why not take it? But for me to upgrade to that chip from a 2630 is 900.00 ouch. Now if they sent me a refund cheque and the same laptop with a 2630QM, sure, no prob.

Run Metro 2033 perfectly fine on ultra on 460sli's...lmao! You might run some console ported games perfectly fine but games that take advantage of actual pc hardware will destroy your 460 sli's. Look at Metro and BF3 coming so why spend more money on a 460 sli rig? Yeah look around these forums. You might just be the only guy to admit to spending more money from a single 6970m to a 460sli...good lord this is a serious fanboy thread if I've ever seen one.

well my system is obviously a free replacement for an m1730 as my sig says -_- and as you can see in my original post I never said it ran metro at "ultra" dont put words in my mouth, but it does run it decently. Lastly I was saying why spend the extra now when you can wait to around when bf3 comes out for an even better card for maybe not that much more than what the 6970 is (if you are going for an ati because they are the best "bang for buck" card) also fan boy thread? explain please

upgrading after a system is bought costs like $1000 for dual cards. i paid $150 for 6970M CF.

    Dang you guys are mean....lol.
Ajbeagles you are not going to convince anyone here about the SLI being a good alternative for "Today's" Gaming.

Most of the people here are enthusiast's at heart and had to pay for their M18x. They want the best at the right price. The 6970M's in Crossfire smoke the 460M's in SLI by a long shot.....with that being said, there is nothing wrong with the 460M's in SLI for "Today's" Gaming.

If you are happy with your config, that's all that matters. I understand where you were trying to go with this.
    Congrats on your M18x!!!

Ajbeagles, I'm sure that for many people, the 460M is a great card and runs their games just fine. The TONE of what you wrote was a little off-putting though, to be honest. "Dont even bother with the 6970 upgrade" can sound like, "you spent all that money on AMD cards?! suckers!!" even if that wasn't your intent.

I went with dual AMD 6970s because I wanted to future-proof as much as I could. Honestly, right now I have XFire disabled because I'm seeing a fair amount of stuttering and I can't run all my games at max settings without a hiccup (even Crysis 2 which surprised the crap out of me). Does that mean it'll run Skyrim or BF3 with max settings w/o XFire? Probably not. My friend opted for the 460M in his M17x R3 because he prefers Nvidia and, after researching it, he felt that was the best card for his gaming needs and fit his budget. Am I more right than him? No. We each got what we could afford AND met our needs.

But I do get what you're saying. I think it was how you stated it that put people on the defensive.

    Peace out.

If i was too upgrade my m18x graphics card from say 6970crossfire to a 6990 crossfire in the near future, is it an easy process to do? Also would it void my dell warranty? I know the m18x has mxm 3.0 so its definitely upgradable, which bring me to my last point if i was to upgrade cards would my m18x cooling solution be good enough do handle an upgrade?

How long do you intend to keep the laptop?

Do you really think in 2 years time with a 1920x1080 display you wont notice a difference in games between the 460m sli and 6970 crossfire rig?
