M18x Memory Discussion Thread

I just ordered 8 gigs of 1866. Any reason to go from 8 to 12 or 16? I have a few bucks to spare, so I am just wondering if I should make the plunge or not.

In general it seems that more memory is better than just faster memory, at least for the money, if you don't need the speed for benchmarking.

So, 8-16GB of 1333MHz for under $100 is probably all most people really need. 1600MHz stuff, especially like the HyperX, is great, but at twice the price, not really twice the improvement.

But the 1600-1866MHz is still a worthy upgrade in terms of using the capability of the CPU/Memory. Even if it's not exactly cheap, 16GB of 1600/1866MHz is still a deal compared to what 32GB of 1333MHz costs at the moment.

Thanks for the heads up. I will probably go ahead and pick up the last 8 gigs because if I don't spend it, my wife will. Now to test my nerve. I never really had the stomach to get under the keyboard of my M17x, so the 18x is even more of a gut wrench.

I did not have any problem installing kingston 1866Mhz into my 17R3. I will tell when I'll recieve the 18x. I guess it will be the same, "Plug & Play" ^^!

From what I mention was, there is 1333 , 1600 , 1866 & 2133 in our bios setting.(I can provide you screenshot later , my beast is not with me)

Hi just installed 16gb 1866 hyper x on my system , bandwith according to sis sandra is 24.5 gb and currently running it at 974 mhz x2 and no probs , got me over the 8k on 3dmark11 with my 2720qm and ati 6990, no adjustments in bios only the fsb , not sure if this helps anyone but there it is .

32GB of 2133MHz would probably cost more than the rig you're putting it in.

Kinda nice the M18x has the capacity for future upgrades if/when the larger sticks ever get more common and less expensive. I suspect it'll be outdated by then, though. Besides, 32GB is just for bragging rights, 16GB is doable, economical, and still excessive, at least for now.
