Putting an R3 motherboard in a R1 system?
I'm looking to upgrade my R1 and I would really like to install a 6970m. The problem is the chipsets of the R1 is not capable with this GPU. What I was thinking was putting in this:
Dell Alienware M17x R3 Intel Motherboard PAR00 LA-6601P / GFWM3 / 0GFWM3 TESTED | eBay
Then, together with the GPU, also put in an SSD and upgrade the RAM and CPU. Is this something that would work? If not, why exactly? Opinions are much appreciated.
Thanks for answers.

Re: Putting an R3 motherboard in a R1 system?
your best choice is selling your current r1, and buying an r3, or if you try to upgrade its going to cost you alot.

No, the motherboards are too differant. Sell it and get a used R3 is the best bet.

Re: Putting an R3 motherboard in a R1 system?
Hmm... I was hoping I could upgrade it rather than selling it. I guess my option would be to install two 5870's? The 6970 on an R1, has it really been done before? I mean, has anyone tried to install it on the motherboard? Could it be done? Furthermore I'm just curious if anyone knows any good R3's or R2's for sale at a low price? The R2 has greater upgrading capabilties, right? And would anyone here be willing to buy an used R1? Thanks.

r2 with 920xm cpu and dual 6990M cards still rocks.
