Default some questions on the upgrading my r3 gpu

Ok guys with some hard earned permission on my future wife .. am ready to throw in the towel in upgrading my R3's gpu but I got some noob concerns.

What is the difference between Dell 7970m and clevo 7970m? Will clevo 7970m gpu work on my R3? or should I only buy and use the dell ones? Sorry for this noob question. I know only that they have different vbios. What 7970m are you guys using on your r3?

Thanks guys! Rep waiting for everyone who will try to help me

As of now we don't know how the Clevo 7970m fairs. From previous cards, the Clevo AMD ones have the same core but use different ram chips. So while the core speed will OC the same, memory will be inferior to the Dell ones which are Hynix.

As for vbios, the Dell ones will allow audio over HDMI. They should be interflashable.

Keep your eyes peeled on the other threads as other users have bought similar cards.

You can flash dell vBios on clevo 7970m. But i will test it when it arrives, on the idea it should work with clevo vBios without any probs.

The 7970's that we have so far come with Hynix vram chips and I've brought it up to 1.5ghz. Geo has pushed his to 1.55ghz. You won't be able to do that in a clevo card. They typically come with Samsung chips that max out way before that. and Unlike the 6990m which didn't see much, if any performance increase as you bumped the ram over 1100mhz, the 7970 is seeing gains with ram increases. It really should be at 1350+ mhz

now that said, the dell cards will cost a lot more, but they will also come with a 1 yr warranty.

    Indeed.

I've used a Clevo 6990M in my R3 and it was a good experience. Worked well with automatic fan control (The R3 is known for working with every GPU anyway). The only difference is the memory chips as everyone else has stated - Clevo using Samsung chips and Dell using the superior Hynix. Prediction: Clevos will max out at 1400 or less on the memory, whereas Dells will max out at 1550 or more. Better memory clocks is compulsory for benching. Gaming is not affected by this, so both will perform at the exact same level.

Furthermore, I was able to flash my Clevo card with a Dell vbios but I was greeted with a black screen when Windows booted. I was able to flash back with my integrated GPU, so I highly doubt flashing a Clevo card with a Dell vbios will work... Do not do it.

But you can only see the significant performance difference (having diff vram) in benchmarking and not in real world game performance? am I right?

Yeah that's correct. I edited my post to add that and you quoted the old one lol ^^

Ultra high memory clocks affect benching only. Both Clevo/Dell will perform at the exact same level whilst gaming.
