Alienware M17x R4
Hey Guys I would like to inform that Alienware M17x R4 is officially released by Dell. Its pretty same as M17x r3 but this has hd 7970m which is 42 pounds more than gtx 675m. And it should be the fastest card for a notebook.
Is it worth to go with M17x R4 while M17x R3 exists with same performance?

Re: Alienware M17x R4
looks like more or less just a refresh of the video card options as its still using sandy bridge processors...

Re: Alienware M17x R4
Yup I wouldn't call this the R4 as the only thing changed was the video card options.

Re: Alienware M17x R4
We don't know. I suspect that the mobo has changed to the 77 series as it can accommodate SB CPUs as well as MXM 3.1 (PCIe 3.0). I'm pretty sure come the 23rd, the CPU options will change.
As the the 7970m. It has 1536 SPUs so it is basically a desktop 6970 with a slower clock speed and on a 28nm die. It does look decent. I suspect that it will outperform the default volted 580m/675m's easily.

Re: Alienware M17x R4
according to unofficial specs...
As widezu mentioned, the 7970m is:
1536 stream processors
800mhz core
1200mhz memory
running at 65-70w
The current gen top tier vid cards run at 100w...the temps will be much cooler which is amazing
you're probably looking at about 30-35% increase over the 6990m based on the unofficial specs.
The desktop 6970 (which was a beast in its own right) has essentially the same specs but has a stock core of 880mhz.
I suspect that an easy overclock will bring the 7970m to desktop 6970 speeds which is huge. I really hope the unofficial specs are correctM17x R3 | i7 2820 | AMD 7970M | 12 GIGS DDR3-1333 | Crucial M4 SSD 128gig | 320 GIG 7200RPM | 1920x1080 60HZ | Sound Blaster X-FI usb

Re: Alienware M17x R4
^^I love your optimism. Too bad I'm tied to nvidia and the 120Hz for my cuda and video work but I an totally gonna envy the owner of the 7970m.
I'm gonna try a bit more optimism and hope that the 7970m is also overvoltable! Imagine that 900+Mhz on the core and a 3DMark 11 of over 5500!
