Re: M17x r1 RAM types
ddr3 SODIMM, I suppose?
I need more ram, because 4gb is just barely enough for video editing and 3d rendering. I want to check with my local gadget/computer stores if they have better prices than Dell, the problem is that Im not quite sure what to ask for since there are so many ram variations.M17x R1 - Nebulah Red

Re: M17x r1 RAM types
yup, DDR3 204pin SODIMM.
I wouldn't pay more than $350 in-store for 8GB of DDR1333 since it can be had for ~ $250-300 online(www.newegg.com). I feel you about dell. $800 for ram is insane.

Re: M17x r1 RAM types
Thanks for the help. Yeah, dell prices are crazy.
By the way, I remember reading about a big arguement between the 1333MHz standard vs 1066MHz, and that since the mobile quad core2's FSB clocks in at 1066MHz, the 1333MHz RAM modules were redundant. I will most likely need to remove my current modules because I strongly suspect they are 2x2GB modules, and replace them with 2x4GB of either 1333MHz or 1066MHz.
I dont know who won the discussion, which standard should I go for?M17x R1 - Nebulah Red

Re: M17x r1 RAM types
unless you are overclocking or bragging to your friends, ddr1333 is a waste.

Re: M17x r1 RAM types
No plans of OC'ing, I use the machine for lots of 3d rendering, so I favour system stabillity rather than a small speed bonus.
I am on the verge of buying right now, but do you know why these Mushkin and Corsair units are priced so differently?? The specs look identical.
Mushkin: Newegg.com - Mushkin Enhanced Essentials 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Dual Channel Kit Laptop Memory Model 996644

Re: M17x r1 RAM types
different brands. quality of components(although As far as I know both have LLWs)
the mushkin is fine, corsair is a top tier manufacturer, they manufacture their own units and qc test them more extensively. some oems only reccomend corsair for the computers, so that's what you pay for. several people here have run the mushkin without issue so again, you're ok.

Re: M17x r1 RAM types
Anyone knows the Ram model on R2? I'm thinking of upgrading my stock 2x2 from Dell to 2x4 (8GB is overkill) so I want to keep one 2GB stock and add a 4GB aftermarket to save some $. Do I need the same type as my 2GB now? What is that model and where can I buy it?

Re: M17x r1 RAM types
You don't need the same brand. I'd just get some DDR1333 and it will SPD down to 1066 if that's what you have anyway. That way when you want 8GB you get more ram, and it will be faster.

the M17X has a pretty forgiving BIOS as far as being picky about ram fortunatly.
just make sure it's name brand and not some no-name ebay garbage, and you'll be fine.M17X-R2 l i7 740QM l CF 5870l 8GB DDR3 l OCZ Vertex2 120/ M-XT 4/500 l RGB LED l BLU-RE l 6300 Ultimate l Windows 7 Pro l Cryo LX l 3 Year CC l Razor Mabma
