Sandy Bridge i7 2760QM vs Ivy Bridge i7 i7-3610QM

Hello, I currently have a m14x R1 but I got tons of problem with it and dell will replace it with a R2. Unfortunatly they'll send me one with a Sandy Bridge proc not Ivy bridge, I was wondering what is the diffence between the 2760QM and the i7-3610QM, I know the frequency are lower on the 3610QM but in term of perf is the 3610QM better or equal to the 2760, is there a really big difference between those 2 proc?

Clock for clock, Ivy Bridge is about 10% faster, so not that noticeable unless you do a lot of rendering and stuff like that.

The biggest difference between R1 and R2 is the graphic card, GT 555m in R1 vs GT 650m in R2.

Thanks for your reply, the R1 was GPU limited for video games, do you think it will be the same for the R2?

Considering that 650m is faster than 560m, don't worry about it being limited.

I just want to know if I'll be GPU limited or CPU limited with the R2 with the i7 2760QM so know if I'll be worth it to buy an ivy bridge in the future but if the R2 is still limited by the GPU then it's not worth buy an ivy bridge imo and by GPU limited I'm talking about video games.

Ofcourse you will be GPU limited. Most of the current games cant even fully use high-end quadcores or first gen i7s yet, so no need to worry you wont be using your 2760qm's limits.

Thanks, I was also considering the ivy bridge because of heat, the R1 because really warm when you are playing and if you have the laptop on your legs thats pretty hot but I think it's also the GPU that make it that hot, I heard the 650 is much cooler so I hope the laptop itself will be cooler and less fan noice would be a plus. Well I guess I'll have to wait for the reviews to know if it makes a big difference and to have the comparisons between sandy bridge and ivy briges, anyway thanks for your replies!

Personally I would ask for the 3610QM and pay the difference between the two and upgrade to IVB.

Look the performance will be a bit better, more than likely run cooler and you won't end up kicking yourself in the pants and second guessing yourself by mutterring to yourself I should of gone with IVB and have the latest and greatest.
I woud talk to a supervisor and demand IVB considering all the trouble you had to go through.

I asked but they told me that they couln't contact directly the people who are making my new PC and they also told me that I'm lucky they changed my R1 for a R2. Well I'm happy with it, I think the biggest upgrade of the R2 is the graphical card, anyway I don't have enough money yet to affort the Ivy but maybe when I'll receive it I can try to make a change if I tell them my CPU is getting too hot or something like that.
