re: Sandy Bridge to Ivy bridge on M14x R1 upgrade possible?
If you're comparing strictly performance on the same laptop with discrete graphics, IB won't perform noticeably better in most situations. Especially since most Alienware laptops are for gaming, which isn't CPU bound.
Probably costs as much as half a new laptop, generally not worth it.

Sandy Bridge to Ivy bridge on R1 upgrade possible?
Now what we really need to find out is if the R2 Motherboard will fit inside the R1 chassis?
Does anyone know about this?
YES, R1 can take R2 motherboard!!!!
Here is a chat with Dell support

re: Sandy Bridge to Ivy bridge on M14x R1 upgrade possible?
Where did you get that info that you cant upgrade to IB with the R1's motherboard? Since the IB is also backward compatible then Yes you can upgrade it: Intel Ivy Bridge Chips Launching Early April 2012, and because of the new motherboard is also the same one that the SB is used on, even it is different, I dont think it will change much, so it is both SB/IB compatible, and all of the bullet point you said are only benefit If you pop a IB in, because that's the advantage of the IB CPU, not the new motherboard. Unless you plan to upgrade the GPU too, that's you'll have to replace the motherboard entirely, because the GT555M is soldered on the board.

M14x R1 Takes R2 motherboard. (No cross posting) (No chat included from Dell)
Sorry about my last post it was closed because I broke forum rules by posting my chat with the Dell rep.
Like I said earlier, the R1 takes the R2 motherboard
The reason I am reposting is because several people told me this was mostly untrue, since the rep apparently had no idea what they were telling me
I would like to tell you that you would then be telling 3 reps that they were wrong. As I was transferred 3 times, and each time they acknowledged the question, (I re-asked everything)
If I didn't break another forum rule, this thread should be open to discussion

I think the Ivy Bridge uses a new motherboard.
