Re: Are there really 2 versions of 555M? GF116 and GF106?
I dont see why not, the GT 640M's power consumption is that of about the GT 525M. Hell we could even see the GT 650M in the M11x r4 and the 660M in the R2

Re: Are there really 2 versions of 555M? GF116 and GF106?
It's not only about power consumption it's also about cost. Dell's trend is also trying to keep the same area of performance because it costs them less and us more.

Are you guys going to upgrade to the next ivy bridge lineup? I may consider in the future downsizing to a 14-15" as my xps 17 isnt exactly portable.

I might go lenovo. I love alienware, but until they get their reliability up and get some proper English speaking Tech I'm going to keep my distance.
I don't know how many times I have to say "my delete key is stuck" and "can you replace the casing that goes AROUND the keyboard", without getting the question so what's the problem 50 million times.Alienware m14x R1

Re: Are there really 2 versions of 555M? GF116 and GF106?
Okay, yeah. At 700mhz my GF116 will beat your GF106 in a benchmark like 3Dmark11. At 750mhz, you'll beat mine...because mine will crash at this speed. The highest I can clock is 730mhz, with extreme almost instant crashes. 720, I can play but crash eventually. I can push 710mhz stable on Crysis 2 (barely) and on BF3 I can only push as far as 700mhz. So all together, 700mhz is about all I can put through.
If you have the GF106, you're actually lucky. My 3dmark11 highest score I ever got was p1722. I've seen p1800-1900 with the GF106.

Re: Are there really 2 versions of 555M? GF116 and GF106?
That score is not the score from the GT555M, because I just run a few test and the framerate is unbelievably low, and feel like the GPU is not switch and I am correct when I click on the "Help" tab on 3DMark11, clearly the GPU adapter is set to Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000 (#0). The benchmark is not test on the GT555M instead the GT555M just run the 3Dmark11 program itself not the benchmark.
Because I also did a test with 3DMark06, and clearly I can get an average framerate (30-50) and it is running using the GT555M as I confirm it on the setting menu itself. So I'm sorry to say that what you guys been discussing on, are not the benchmark of the GT555M, but the Intel iGPU. This is not a new problem because if you do some research you'd see even those with who are desktop user with something like i7 2600K with a GTX580 still having problem of low score.

Well if you just plug an HDMI cable in, it forces every app to use the GT 555M
