    Ok.....
I browse through most of the 75-76 pages of info on modding a m11xr1. I went with the pll cut pin 14 method. TME is now disabled.
I am a newb at some of this, so I apologize if my questions have already been answered. I'm in the comprehension phase trying to learn what I can.

2 questions, 1 of which will probably answer the other.

When I use setpll, I've been trying anywhere from 270-300 range (i.e. setpll alienware-m11xr1 280). About 50% of the time, the laptop will lockup and need a hard reset. I'm assuming this is because of the stock ram in the machine? Which leads me to the second question. I've seen 3-4 different types of ram that people are suggesting for multiple variations of mod's. For my particular setup, what would be the best ram to buy? I would like to max my ram out a 8GB but is there a benefit of only having 4GB for performance sake?

Also, I believe this information is needed for deciding the best ram.
    CPUZ: Memory
    FSBRAM 2:3
    6:6:6:15

I hope I've provided enough info to hopefully help someone answer my questions that have been confusing. Thank you in advance.

Have you set OC mode in the bios? If so and it's freezing in the 270-300 range, then ensure the GT335 is the active GPU and try a ramped OC instead. Ie:

    Code:
    setPLL Alienware-m11xR1 275.284.293.302.311.320.329.338.347

Thank you very much! worked like a charm, and have tested 4 times already without issue!!

At this point because I am able to achieve the 2.0 overclock, is there a need for a "better" ram?

Hmm, now I'm leary about doing the mod on my SLG. I don't want to do it only to have to invest $80 in 4GB of HyperX that isn't even guaranteed to run at CL6.

I have 8GB G.Skill in there with CL9 @ 1333Mhz. I can guarantee it won't run at CL6 even at 1066MHz, 2GB sticks I might have a chance, but not 4GB unless I got really really lucky. Too bad there's no way to test it ahead of time.

    Another satisfied m11xR1 user

Try booting up with only 1 core enabled (not sure if you can set only 1 core in your bios, if not then use msconfig) and seeing if you can OC further. If yes, then you've hit a CPU OC wall requiring more voltage to go further via a voltage regulator mod &. If can't overclock further with only 1 core active then you've hit a RAM OC wall requiring better RAM, eg: the CL5 hyperX noted here to OC further.

I have 2x4gb GSkill dimms woring fine @ 1000mhz Cas6. but, im in OC mode with the 333mhz mod. so my Ratio is easier on the RAM (3:2) vs nonOC mode (1:2).

You could also try one dimm only that will take stress off the chipset and you could choose the best dimm to use. you would be @ 4gb ether way so why not try?

Good idea. Maybe give that a shot.
