You know you can avoid SetFSB by further modding through a FSLx mod (requires soldering)? That will allow you to boot up at 2Ghz, like it's stock. I'd rather you do the TME mod first if you can though, to prove you are stable at 2Ghz.

Just ordered a refurb R1 today. It just has 2GB RAM so I want to upgrade. Ideally - 8GB...but what I've read in this thread so far (I checked every page, lol) is that the Kingston HyperX 1333 7CAS is the best (Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 Laptop Memory Model KHX1333C7S3K2/4G). Any options you guys recommend in the 8GB range? Is it worth "risking" it (i.e. my OC not working due to RAM) for 8GB? I was looking at this set (8GB) for $65 after rebate:

    Newegg.com - PNY Optima 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Laptop Memory Model MN8192KD3-1066

the M11x uses Cas 6 timings nomatter what. so you need RAM that will run @ Cas 6 form whatever mhz you are running. that in mind... the HyperX kit is the best we can try to use cuz it uses the lowest Cas we can find for RAM above 1066mhz. you will need RAM similar to this in order to get over 2.0ghz.

right now im using the stock ram to get 2.0ghz @ 1000mhz Cas 6. if i tried for say 2.16ghz it would fail cuz i would need 1333mhz RAM @ Cas 6 and most if not all 1066mhz ram would cry if you tried that.

Thanks - the PNY kit I linked to above is 1066mhz with CAS7 and 4GBx2. Is that worth a shot? It's $65 versus $80 for only 4GB. Then again, I don't want to risk my OC chances. It appears from what you posted above that the RAM is important but not paramount?

EDIT: I'm only interested in going to 2GHz (or slightly below that) - if that matters. My goal is to enjoy playing BF:BC2 on this thing.

as i said above. it will determine your max OC.

@ 2.0ghz you would be asking the RAM to do 1000mhz @ Cas 6. if you think it can handle that them by all means.

edit: everything i have been saying refers to the SLG PLL. im not sure which PLL you have and or how it may differe from the SLG.

How would you go about extracting the .rom of the bios to look at it in an editor? It is just an exe package right now that does not extract before running. I ask because I am quite interested in altering the way that the bios handles the ram and OC stuff (eg it is very poorly done currently....)
I would like to see an OC Mode WITH speedstep and with the 1:2 ram ratio (in addition to support for higher cas ram)

that would be awesome but 99% sure someone tried already and got some error and a force close.

Just decided to cancel the R1 and get an R2 i5. Refurb was $729 for i5/4GB/250. Pretty good, IMO. Only $130 more than buying an R1 Refurb with the HyperX RAM.

That will get a little more performance and less battery.
