Keep It Or Get Rid Of.

Please can some help me:
I am a newby to computers, and I have bought a Acer Aspire notebook,
it came with a 4 MB memory, and loaded with Linux, as I didn't know about Linux I got a guy to load with XP, now its slower than before so I want to know if I can reload Linux myself with help, and or is there some think
that needs buying to put in the works and then keep XP.

It's a nice machine I like it for trips out, so if its possible to
fix it I would like to keep it.

You can install linux alongside XP. I'd recommend Mint or Ubuntu.

Use GParted to make your windows XP partition smaller, then tell the linux installer to install it into the free space alongside windows.
