I have an Acer 5742g. I myself did not buy this.
My friend ended up breaking his when his mother smashed it against their floor out of anger. He gave it to me because:
The LCD Display was broken
The bottom part of the chassis was broken
I took it in, and sent it into Acer for repair. They did indeed repair these two parts. They made no other change.
However, temperatures remain extremely high (ALL video games cause the GPU to rise to about 98 degrees celsius on average. The CPUs rise to about 70-80 on load.) This is AFTER applying MX-2 to both the CPU and the GPU. I used a small amount, but at this point I fear I might have used too small of an amount.
Performance remains terrible in comparison to other 5742G laptops. For example, my 3DMark 06 score hangs at about 3000, while multiple reviews note scores over 7000 (The two i've seen had a score of about 7500 and 8300 respectively)
I am using the latest 296.10 verde drivers from NVIDIA.
I am making sure I'm using the GT540m
I have done virus scans
On a curious note:
Changes in clock speeds do not affect performance. Regardless of whether the core clock is at 330 mhz, or 672 mhz, there is no difference in performance for me. This is across all games, as well as the MSI Kombustor.
This is on a laptop with:
NVIDIA GT 540m
4GB DDR3 RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
I am currently contemplating reinstalling Windows and seeing if that helps.
