    Run it as root.

If it still doesn't work, try a different live CD (one that doesn't have the "Filter access to /dev/mem" kernel option set), OR install a real Linux distro (not necessary a full desktop Linux, just enough to allow you to run custom kernels) and rebuild the kernel with that option disabled. (I know, jumping straight from the Windows world to compiling Linux kernels is a bit steep, but I'm pretty sure there is someone on the Web who can help you with it.)

EDIT: OpenSUSE 11.1 live CD should work (but not 11.2 or later, as those disable /dev/mem access).

Default Re: Possible fix for the Acer x920G vs. GeForce 9600M GT issue [CONFIRMED working on 6920G]

i did this yesterday for my 6920g.
flash worked ok and all is running again with some new menus on startup.
i was hoping this would enable the option for Virtualization Technology (VT) but couldnt see it any where. is that something different?
also i was half expecting it to help unlock my 9600m gs card which i have never been able to overclock, but that also didnt seem to make any difference.
is there anything on the new menus that is worth changing?
what it did do, however, was to break the activation on my windows 7 64
is that because the 6920g file says "6920G (with unlocked menus, no SLIC2.1)"?
got a bit late last night so will have to activate windows sometime soon. unless you have another solution?

The 6920G BIOS I posted contains and old Vista-only SLIC (the one the 6920G originally came with). It is forbidden on this forum to post BIOSes specifically patched for SLIC2.1 - even I am stretching the rules quite a bit by using previously-patched BIOSes as my base, some of which contain SLIC patches.

(In fact, I initially expected that mods will ask me to take down the SLIC-modded BIOSes, and replace them with SLIC-less ones. So far, this has not happened - but I'm not willing to violate the rules by intentionally SLIC-patching a BIOS.)

However, you may try using the BIOS for the 8920G, which is SLIC-patched; though it will probably make your computer report itself to Windows as a 8920G. (The 8920G is basically a 6920G in a bigger chassis, but the model identifiers are hardcoded in the BIOS image for the Phoenix BIOS used in the 6/8920G, unlike the 5720G/7720G's InsydeH2O EFI, where model identifiers are stored in the NVRAM, unaffected by BIOS flashing.)

BTW, VT should be enabled by default with this BIOS - if it is still disabled, your CPU probably doesn't support it.

    @ .NetRolller 3D

I'm lost. I read SLIC was associated with activation, after reading Triturbo's post on 11th May, and your reply. If I flash an 8920 will activation function ok. I don't mind if I have to re-activate, as long as it works.

Does that mean your 8920 BIOS will work fine with Vista activation and Win 7 activation. I understood/thought that was what you meant when you said the SLIC2.1 was backwards compatible. Is the 8920 now all compatible. Am sure it looks good (with unlocked menus & SLIC2.1), or am I completely lost.

    @ everyone, Lizzardos, and Mookill,

Following on from what Lizzarddos and Mookill were saying about memory versions of the 9600M GT. Clearly DDR3 easily outperforms DDR2 for speed. However a long time ago, I read that GPU ram has more relevance in higher resolutions. With the 8920 at 1920x1080 I wondered if the 1GB DDR2 version might be better for an 8920. Anyway I found a bargain DDR3.

I believe the 8920 BIOS shall work in a 6920 (given the identical motherboards between the two), but it will likely make the 6920 identify itself as a 8920 and possibly operate with performance settings tuned for the cooling capabilities of the 8920.
However, you can probably transplant the SLIC from the 8920 BIOS into the 6920 one, if you are worried. Again, I'm not allowed to post the name of the program for SLIC-modding Phoenix BIOSes due to forum rules, but I'm sure you will find it with some Googulation.

I'm not sure if even discussing SLIC mods is allowed here, though.

    EDIT: Quote from forum rules:
Discussion of illegal activities such as fraud, software and music piracy and other intellectual property violations are not allowed. There is a zero tolerance policy for illegal activity being discussed.
Discussion of cracking passwords or bypassing security measures is prohibited.
I'm pretty sure this forbids even discussing SLIC modding.

BTW I highly disagree with the use of the wording "intellectual property" in the rules - doing so legitimizes the music industry's constant push for even stricter copyright laws, in the name of protecting private property. Copyright and related rights are protection of business interests, and not property rights, at least in most jurisdictions.

@.NetRolller 3D: of course you are correct, and i would not dream of asking for any sort of piracy on this forum.....
i was surprised that the SLIC was even mentioned. anyway, i was worried enough about trying the 6920 one, so will pass for now on the 8920 unless someone here has tried already.
if anyone here has a link for a tested usb boot flash that would be a big help.

you were also correct about the VT (see pic) , so may fire up a virtual machine again when i have some time. i thought it would be in the menus and didnt have time to test last night.

    @ gazzacbr, .NetRolller 3D

Look back at Lizzarddos posts. That was a successful 6920 SBIOS flash. Showed up in CPU-Z as a 6920.

    @ .NetRolller 3D

I was worried about what gazzacbr posted that it "broke the activation on Win 7". That's the nuts and bolts of what I posted last. I wouldn't want to discuss SLIC mods. Not me. Merci.
Mmm I did read of BIOS modding to make cracked Windows OS. Not for me though. I don't think anyone suspects you of tomfoolery.
I remember now though that Lizzarddos had a successful result, and your 8920 SBIOS MXM structure mirrors the 6920. All is good I think. These systems I am looking at all have their original Win Vista 32-bit OS's installed. From what I have read and understand your SBIOS's should be fine to move to Win 7.

sorry guys, i re-read the posts but... just to clarify, did Lizzarddos use the 8920 bios on his 6920g?

i mulled over it for few days and couldnt bring myself to pay almost double the price. if you can get a DDR3 version for cheap, you should take that over DDR2 regardless of how much ram.

its all marketing these days - seen a few lappies with a nvidia 540M with 2GB ram - what a waste.
