Hey guys, I'm having trouble with my laptop thinking there's a second monitor and therefore letting the mouse extend off to the right indefinitely. I recently had to install display drivers from this post since acer didn't feel like packing in the drivers for the 6550M when shipping my laptop. Soon as I installed them I noticed the extended display problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled and same result. I reformatted and this was the first thing I did.

Anybody else here have the same problem and have a solution?

Question... How did you managed to overclock your gpu until that high ?

Is yours the HD 6550 or HD 5650 ?

Has anyone experienced overheating when doing non extensive tasks?

My CPU temps are 98C and my GPU is 88C just when I'm watching videos on my laptop....

There must be something wrong, open task manager and check cpu % occupation, it should NOT be anything near 100% if you are only watching a video.

If CPU occupation is normal, then you have something wrong in the heat dissipation compartment.

finally updated catalyst drivers to 12.4.
set it to discreet first then updated. when i switched back to switchable though, aero effects have been disabled and i think something got messed up with the switching feature since its always on intel graphics now. have to switch to discreet mode in bios to actually switch gpus :/ any help?

6550 I think you can do a vbios mod for the 5650 to get higher voltages

For those in the know, are there reliable/easy-to-install drivers for the switchable graphics on this laptop for Linux?

I recently built a new home PC and my laptop is no longer my main gaming machine, so I'd like to throw a distro on there. Last time I tried Ubuntu the driver's or rather a script existed but I could never get it to work properly and had terrible battery life. Still get 4-6hrs in Windows. Ubuntu, at the time, got 2-3 max.

Something is very wrong with my 4820TG.

I ran chkdsk today. It took over 2 hours to complete.

Now my fan is running nonstop and CPU temps are high 60s or low 70s deg C with no programs running. GPU is around 55-60 deg C.

Why are my temps so high after running chkdsk? Before I had no temperature concerns whatsoever, and I was idling my CPU in the low 40s.
Acer 4820TG - i5-480m, HD 5650 - $675 - two and half years old, starting to feel old, maybe just need an SSD

Possible upgrades - LG 900p screen, Momentus XT

    Next laptop (2013?): 14" 900p screen, BR-RW, ATI 8xxx series dGPU w/ 2GB GDDR6 ram, 6-core AMD or Haswell, 8GB DDR4 ram, 1 TB SSD, 6 MP 1080p webcam, Lightpeak + USB 3.0, 16 hrs battery, <4 lbs
