Among other models, Acer has committed to supporting drivers for Windows 8 on the AS1830T series. I would hope that includes a BIOS update to enable NX/XD, but I have yet to see anything. I've contacted Microsoft about it and as of now they have been working on something behind the scenes, but I don't know if/when that will become available for the rest of us. Meanwhile, maybe somebody can contact Acer to bring this to their attention? I am out of warranty (by only a few months), and had I realized they were doing this sooner I would have contacted them.

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense to offer Windows 8 drivers when there's no way to enable XD. It's such a stupid issue too, XD is so very basic that you'd figure it would be enabled by default rather than disabled. There's no virtualization enable/disable option in the BIOS either, but at least that defaults to enabled.

I would hope if someone hears something they'd post it. My 1830 is also out of warranty, but I'm tempted to call Acer just to see if they have any position on the issue.

If you boot directly from a DVD or USB drive and install Windows 8 that way there's no XD requirement. If you're installing from Windows to do an upgrade you can also get around the error by using setup.exe from the \sources folder. Just did it myself earlier this evening on my 1830T and Windows 8 runs just fine.

I've had mixed results with that. For example, since the Release Preview I can no longer run Windows 8 x86 or x64 in a virtual machine because when I tell the hypervisor to expose PAE/NX support, it can't because the BIOS won't even allow it to be exposed to the host OS. Even booting from an ISO in the virtual environment won't overcome that.

What really burns me is that Acer provided no facility, even in the BIOS setup, to say "I know what I'm doing, enable NX." As I stated before, it was completely unnecessary, if not irresponsible for Acer to disable a hardware security enhancement (which NX is) in the BIOS then provide no means to enable it.

For 6200 swap, just open the back main cover (5-6 screws total),
plier out CAREFULLY the 2 antennae (1 black 1 white)
from the Broadcom wifi contacts, then unscrew one screw
on the left, pull out the crap Broadcom card and then slot in the 6200,
screw back in single screw on the left,
and plier back in 2 antennae to the new card contacts, and you're done.

    Overall's easy and fast.
Do be VERY careful especially when pliering OUT the 2 antennae,
suggest you do with 2 hands on the plier so you can control your
"delicate" strength better and won't turn out pulling with too much
force may accidentally damage the 2 leads by any chance.
Also do it slowly in rotational motion to gradually loosen them
instead of hard-force pull out all at once.

Only pliering out 2 antennae's little tricky procedure,
pliering back in is much more straight forward and risk free.

Install the CD-driver-software that comes with the
6200 package, either before or after you swap in the card
should both work just fine. I installed it before.

    Hope that helps =)
I am considering the same, swapping the Broadcom for an Intel 6200. However, when I look online, there are many varieties of 6200 Intel cards. They look to be the same size etc.but have different numbers and some different (more advanced wifi specs it seems). Which exact number should I get? My machine is an Acer 1830T-68U118

    Thanks,
    K

I finally managed to get my 1830. :-D

I am a fan of the 11,6" format. I'm currently using the Aspire Timeline 1410 DualCore Celeron SU2300 but wanted to upgrade to a more powerful platform.

I purchased a refurbished one from ebay. i7 with 4gig and 500Hdd. It rocks but the system came to me with a bare windows 7 and lacks some conveniences activating-deactivating functions, etc.

I was willing to experience the Original Windows7 from the 1830. I think I can use the recovery disks from the 1410, but I'm sure that the 1830's ones are more updated.

Does anybody want to make a few $$ making a copy of the recovery disks for me? I'll pay for the disks, the work and the shipping.

You can get the recovery disks from Acer for $19. That should not break the bank. You can probalby find a set on ebay for less than that.

Acer is asking me $50,35 for them, and they are not even for the 1830t, they are for the 5740. :-(

Hey guys what's the most current version/model of the 1830T? I'm in the market for a 11.6" notebook, but I heard they discontinued this line?

Has anyone had a problem with the Ethernet port. Mine has always been spotty and now I have to fiddle with the cable to an exact angle and pressure to get it to work. Is this common? Any fixes? I'm happy to pop the hood if need be.
