@8930Guy : There is no mean to directly try the SDHC card into another computer,...only vintage are laying around

But my SDHC card works in my camera. I use the CF reader of my printer (with an SDHC to CF adapter) to transfers my pictures

Under Vista (see my previous post) I checked another SDHC
and an old MMC card without success on the 8930G reader

    I have several questions about my ACER 8930g, 2 x 2.26GHz, 4GB DDR3 (2 x 2GB) and it is VT-x enabled.

What is the maximum memory I can install? I would like to use 2 x 4GB DDR3 since I do a lot of virtualisation and heavy photoshop work. Will 8930g accept it? I noticed some users in here use 6GB, which is over the Acer's official 4GB maximum allowance?

What is the highest CPU I can replace with? Will it take a quad like Q9100 or will X9100 be better?

    Thanks for your answers

VT is not enabled from factory , you have to flash the bios with vt-enabled version.

As far as I know, nobody reports installing 8GB on its 8930G...

Do a search in this thread upon "Q9000" you will see that you can only upgrade to Q9000 (not Q9100). Not all MB are upgradeable.
The difference between Q9000 and X9100 is only noticeable if your software takes advantage of the quad core.

Hi shakennstirred, you post quicker than I do

To go back to my card reader problem, I'm about to buy a I/O board on eBay to replace mine.

But I have a doubt now...Does the 8930G card reader support SDHC ?

    TIA,

    Laurent

    They work with mine.

I have to say though, the card reader would not work when I first got the laptop.

I eventually re-loaded a completely clean version of Win 7, loaded the drivers and it has worked ever since.

If you have 2 drives, you could try a completely fresh install of the OS and dual boot, and see if that makes any difference before spending time and money replacing the card reader.

    1. I flashed it to the "unofficial" BIOS v1.21, which is why I said that my machines is VT-x enabled.

    2. My understanding that "unofficially" 8930G does supported up to 8GB. Several users from 'The Acer Guy' blog/forum confirmed that on certain 8930G machines 8GB worked. Maybe, it is all due to the BIOS?

    3. I read if your motherboard is # MB.ASZ0B.004, then it will support any quad processors. Most 8930G are # MB.ASZ0B.001, which supported mostly dual cores. Just type in the motherboard serial # on ebay and it will listed the 8930G model #. Like mine, which is 8930G-884G32Bn and it uses MB.ASZ0B.001 motherboard.

Are you saying that even for a MB.ASZ0B.001 motherboard, it can use a quad cpu like Q9000?

I just upgraded from Vista 32bit to Seven 64bit, so this is a fresh install.
About money, this is is not so expensive, I found a new board for 35€/50$ and on eBay it cost 12€/17$.
About time...well, this is not time, it's pleasure

I was refering to the post of starsie in this thread post5586891

You know more than, I know. I can't help you, I don't install any Q900x or more than 4GB of memory. (I'm just fighting with my card reader )

    Regards,

Here is some absolutely correct info for people wanting to upgrade their 8930g with Core Duo to Quads.

First of all: NONE of the 8930g notebooks support Q9100, Q9200 or QX9300 Quads. PERIOD! Acer has NEVER MADE a motherboard or BIOS (1.0 - 1.14) for 8930g that supports the MICROCODE of those processors.

That is a checked (physically) and confirmed FACT!
For your own sake - DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME.

    NOW GOOD NEWS!

IF your 8930g shows the following specs under "MOTHERBOARD" in CPU-Z:

    Model: Aspire 8930 PSMBOU-1234567
    Chipset: Intel PM45 Rev. 07
    Southbridge: Intel 82801IM (ICH9-M)

AND (VERY IMPORTANT!) it is using 1066mhz DDR3 memory (NOT DDR2!), which means that it FULLY supports 1066mhz FSB, then:

You CAN UPGRADE to OEM Q9000 SLGEJ 2.00GHz 6mb L2 cache.

This is how their Quad Core 8930g's come from FACTORY.

As a matter of fact, if your 8930g has the above specs you can use (or upgrade to) any of the following OEM (not ES!) processors:

    P7350 2.00GHz
    P8400 2.26GHz
T5800 2.00GHz (The slowest one, anybody would want to upgrade =)! )
    T6400 2.00GHz (Same turtle as T5800! )
    T9400 2.53GHz

and the rest of the 45nm Core 2 Duo family including Extreme with 1066MHz FSB.

    And FINALLY:

Q9000 2.00GHz (As fast as you can get on this notebook. Period! )

KEEP IN MIND, that if you are upgrading from slower processors that have 25W thermal design to Extreme or Quad with 45w thermal design you will get a noisier and hotter machine. But as long as you won't try to OVERCLOCK (which InsydeH20 bios DOES NOT support natively!) and clean your vents, you will be fine, even under long full loads.

    Hope this answered MANY questions.

    AR.
Can you confirm that your 8930G use MB.ASZ0B.001 motherboard? For example, mine is 8930G-884G32Bn so what is your model? Could be that your motherboard is # MB.ASZ0B.004, which uses quad cores?
