I purchased my Aspire 8930G in late June 2009, just before Windows 7 was released. Its been working fairly well until the last few days.

I have some serious malware on my pc. I've done a clean install and used my recovery discs to install the original factory settings, but I'm still having problems.

I'm pretty sure part of the hidden partitions are infected, either partition 1 - PQservice (15 GB: 3 GB free) or partition 4 (3.5 GB: 2.2 GB free). Both are OEM drives. Any suggestions for how to properly clean malware from these partitions?

I am new here....I have had my 8930g for 2 years now and I love it....but have encountered a problem.....\i had some difficulty last night getting it to come out of sleep...but managed to get it going after shutting it down......restarted fine....decided to turn it off when I went to bed....this morning after pressing the start button and getting the starting windows screen I got the following message:

    "checking file system on c:
    type of file is NTFS
    volume label is ACER
one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency
you may cancel, but it is strongly recommended to continue
    to skip press any key"
then it counts down the seconds and if I press any key nothing happens but a blank screen
if I leave it, it stalls at 1 second.....is my c: drive toast?
I cannot even get to where I can boot it in safe mode after pressing F2, there is no option for that...
I have tried turning it off and starting again and keep getting to this point....
    any thoughts...ideas?
    thanks so much in advance.....

Reset, then wait. Let it to its business. If it seems like it's stuck, it's not. It does actually take a while for a 500 gig hard drive to be checked. Mine usually hangs at 57% for about 10 minutes. Sometime it takes about 10 minutes for it to even start.
This hasn't got anything to do with the physical condition of the disk, it's just checking the data isn't corrupted. If you're still getting nowhere, run the windows/acer recovery disk that comes with the lappy.

Also another thing that sometimes helps, go into your BIOS and check your time and date are set correctly. This usually helps inconsistencies in EXT2, EXT3 and EXT4 file systems (used in various linux distro's). Not sure about NTFS as I've not done much with it, but it's worth a shot.

Following applies to Windows 7 (Not sure about Vista):

I've had this problem before; you will have to keep restarting until it boots - It may take a few tries. After it boots, apply the following fix from Microsoft:

The Chkdsk.exe program does not start correctly on a Windows 7-based computer

Something to do with the IR sensor.

thanks so much for your replies.....I ran my recovery disk and I am still having difficulty.....I will try the above suggested fix......I have windows 7

I have the lappy set in safe mode with networking as it is not responding/hanging when started in regular mode..in the safe mode it responds normally....any suggestions other than the recovery disk and the chkdsk.exe ?

Hey guys, does anybody else's GPU run at around 50 degrees idle? I'm sure that's too hot...

Is there any way to prevent the GPU overheating? I've already got a notebook cooler, and it's still getting to around 85 degrees whilst gaming

Edit: It's a 9700M GT, and my CPU (X9100) never goes above 40 degrees.

@Pantry: I actually just noticed this yesterday myself! 9600M GT/P8400. The CPU holds steady at 39/37 (core1/2) , and the GPU idles at 48-53, but will ramp up to 70-80+ during gaming. I'm not one who knows temperature levels though, so hopefully someone here knows.
