8930G overheating. <2yrs old
Well I was amazed at what I just found inside my laptop.
Guilty as charged, I swapped my 500GB HD with a 250GB SSD which may have helped heat my laptop.
anyway... playing fallout 3, my laptop shuts down.. no warning just turns off. feeling the back of the laptop and its VERY warm. The fan was going barmy so its definitely a heat problem. looked at the side and back vents they seem clear, took back off and the fan has a little dust on it but should be ok. Then I read on another forum about build up of lint under the fan. The fan is only held in by 3 small screws so i removed them, removed the fan and..... WOW look at all that fluff. My poor laptop, how the hell was it supposed to keep itself cool when it cant even breath! I hoovered this out (beware of any hoover which has static build up) and i thought id also check the heat sink on top of the GPU. I was wondering about putting an aftermarket fan on this but clearance was a big issue. Being me i fumbled with one screw thinking it would be too tight to remove anyway but it was VERY loose. noticing this i checked the rest and they were all loose. I've nipped them all up tight which should help the heat transfer from the gpu to the heat sink.... now i'm wondering. If the screws were all loose anyway will the thermal paste/pad contact have been sepperated just slightly and will need to be renewed.

Re: 8930G overheating. <2yrs old
Thanks for this post. I'd recently defluffed my 15 month old 8930G but had omitted to take the fan out, having seen this I decided to do just that and had the same problem, loads of fluff in the exit vents off the sides of the fan. Whilst in there I checked the screws on my graphics card heatsink but they seem tight enough to me, so I left this well alone. I'm hoping you've now solved the slight heating issues I've been experiencing recently.
You get rep from me. Cheers.

Re: Acer Aspire 8930G Owner's Lounge
Hi 8930G owners,
This is my 1st post on notebookreview, and I hope someone can help me
with my card reader problem.
So, I'm running my 8930G under Vista Premium 32bits SP2.
The first time I inserted a sd-hc card in the card reader,
the driver installation took place, then ...nothing
The drive never appeared in Window explorer, even after "display updating".
I tried another sd card, an old mmc card without success.
I rebooted the notebook with the sd card inserted, nothing happened.
I upgraded the last drivers from Acer site, then from JMICRON site, and still when I inserted Sd cards nothing Happened
Totally desperate, I even phoned Acer support
They proposed to reinstall everything from scratch (as usual...)
Well, if someone already faced this problem and solved it, please tell me how.
Regards,
Laurent

Re: Acer Aspire 8930G Owner's Lounge
I'm wondering if anyone has had the problem with the file CompPtcVUI.exe?
I've noticed recently that i've been suffering from a slow CPU and when checking which processes are running this file is constantly using up my CPU. It is located in the Acer Bio Protection folder. I don't know what is causing this program to start up or what I can disable to stop it running. I currently dont use the Bio Protection on my laptop and would like to stop this file running without deleting it.
Any help would be most grateful

Re: Acer Aspire 8930G Owner's Lounge
Sometimes it goes as high as 70-75, then back down to 0. Most of the time it sits around the 40-45 range. I'm thinking of just uninstalling the Bio software as I don't really need it

Re: Acer Aspire 8930G Owner's Lounge
First, if you've made your system restore disks, then you might as well delete it as you can easily enough restore it later if you decide to use it. If you haven't, and you want to play it safe ant avoid deleting it (just in case), then have you checked that Bio isn't starting up at bootup even though you don't use it? Presumably if the process is running then Bio is in some kind of auto start mode? I know it's part of the eData Security Management module which includes Fingerprint related software, so it seems it definitely relates to Bio, if that helps?
