Re: Why Acer is cheaper compared to Dell?
If you look even for a little while, you'll hear horror stories about every computer manufacturer, Dell and Acer included.
Sorry if I'm not around too often - life seems to have gotten in the way of NBR.

Re: Why Acer is cheaper compared to Dell?
true, but im not referring to horror stories, im referring to minor annoying issues that come up after 6 months of ownership. Like the finish peeling off, joints getting loose.
i suppose as evidence i could quote the instance of a particular university in singapore that switched from offering acer as special student purchase to fujitsu due to very high level of technical issues and complaints with the acers.
they were offering acer travelmates, correct me if im wrong, thats the business line right?

Re: Why Acer is cheaper compared to Dell?
Quanta, Compal and some other contract manufactures are the actual builders of the notebook computers.
http://www.cnn.com/TECH/computing/99...idg/index.html
Support may differ, materials may differ, features may differ and design is certainly different to be a HP, Acer, Dell and etc., however, build quality is pretty much the same.
Debate "build quality" all day if it makes you happy.

Re: Why Acer is cheaper compared to Dell?
It really doesn't matter if the same companies build the laptops. That doesn't mean they build them the same..."build quality" very much comes down to the design for the casing for instance and the materials used, as mentioned. Build quality does NOT describe the quality of the company that does the building....

Re: Why Acer is cheaper compared to Dell?
The logical in laptops , are to do model to model comparison.
Not brand to brand .
Some models are simple failures ...Flaws in their electronics, the external look and plastics quality comes second in value .ACER TM 2414 WLMi | P1.6M 725A (2128 MHz) | 1GB Ram | Blue Scorpio WD160GB | BT int Broadcom 2045 | PCMCIA card reader 5in1 EDUP | Panasonic UJ-870 | Belkin F8E353eaLRG

Re: Why Acer is cheaper compared to Dell?
[QUOTE=
out of all the brands, i hear most complaints about acers. the casing dosent seem to stand up to wear and tear. not good if you bring it to university every day.[/QUOTE
Acers biggest problem is that they undervalue their products. So, mommy or daddy chooses them ahead of Dell etc. Because they are "cheaper".
Hence Acers biggest problem. Too much fiddling from kids that know squat about computers.
Screw up the lappie and Acer gets a bad name. See it all the time on the Acer forum.
Cheers,
Theo

Re: Why Acer is cheaper compared to Dell?
Acer notebooks qualities aren't as bad as their apparent reputations. My parents have two TravelMates (business line) purchased 4 years ago. Still going strong. My partner has an Aspire, and though no where near as good as my ThinkPads, the built quality is very similar to my aunt's HP notebook and our old Dells.

Re: Why Acer is cheaper compared to Dell?
I have had 3 acer notebooks in the last 3 years two are alive... one is going strong the other... well just say your prayers before boot...
Alive 1.5GhzCel/512MB/SiSGPU/120GB(upgraded due to failure of stock 60GB)
sorta alive... Ferrari 5005 2.0Ghz turionx2... I think It's as software issue...
dead: older ferrari... dead, basically lit on fire... (smoke and funny odor has to be close enough right?)
by the way acer doesn't have support... unlike Dell."We are the 99% - We are to big to fail" for the other side of the coin info wars.com

Re: Why Acer is cheaper compared to Dell?
I think one of the reasons Acer can give a more reasonably priced product vs. Dell is advertising. As far as I know, Acer does little/no advertising, or at least not 1/10th as much as Dell.
