Mine is 296.10 WHQL but Diablo 3 gives me the message that the display driver is out of date.

Hi and thank you for a good thread.

I've just installed a new CPU in my 5930g. Its the P8700 on 2x2,53 GHz. It runs a lot cooler than the previous P7350, but the different cores on the P8700 have a huge difference in max temp under load. Anyone got a clue?

This SS is taken while Orthos is stressing the CPU.

Try using HWiNFO64 instead of CPUID for more accurate temp. Both programs are free.

If temps still appear to be too high try cooling pad.

    Hello folks.
Ah, the good old thread is still here.

Well, I just wanted to mention that my laptop is still alive and kicking after 4 years (just crossed this threshold on November 1st).

Given that the X9100 I bought was too hot for my laptop (the C0 stepping problem mostly - couldn't find the E0 one, and the potential ones I did find were rip-offs price wise), I decided to sell it and get myself the P9700 instead (right now I'm using my old P7350).
After that, I will probably get myself an SSD and use the current HDD with a caddy as a storage drive instead of the ODD.

The only real problem I see now on this laptop is the GPU.
9600m GT is going be a problem for playing some new games.
Mind you, I don't really play AAA titles in the first place (or mindless shooters), so that's not my problem - but Star Citizen is a game I would be interested in once it comes out and I'm afraid my 9600 probably won't be able to run it (at all, or at least with any degree of decency).

Meh... its not a great loss seeing how I WILL at some point get myself a new laptop with much better specs, but I wouldn't want to trash this one (not by a long shot).
I will probably give it to my father seeing how he mainly does Office work (and uses Autodesk/Catia occasionally - but for nothing too intensive).

One thing I was curious about though.
Would it be possible to replace the (back-light) display in this laptop for one that has LED instead?
Power efficiency could be increased like that at the very least, along with overall brightness/intensity.
Are there LED laptop displays of 15.4" (our display size) that have the same internal cable ports?

    EDIT:
It would seem that its possible to replace the CCFL backlight with a LED backlight on an existing display (ours included).
    :-)
Heh... I might even do this at some point just for the fun of it.

Hi all Acer 5930g owners! Nice thread.
I have 5930g about 3 years, and it works pretty decent. Fn key doesn't work and lan port isn't hold the cable, bc it fell while cable was in
I haven't read the full thread but It's quite interesting and interesting people hang here :-) I spent much money on my lappy, my specs in the profile, I don't know how to fill the signature =(. But it's not full list, definitely.
I see that there are many people doing modding to their's 5930g. It' kinda cool! It's old but fully armed lap, modern games are not the obstacle. I think that I'll be using it year or even more.
2Deks, nice config! :-) Your CPU is cool, mine is less cool a bit.
My last mod will be the DDR2-800 8GB. Could anyone suggest me in RAM choise, please?

This isn't about who has the 'coolest' laptop.
    At least, not for me.
    :-)
The reason I upgraded my laptop is because it had the potential (still does) and I enjoyed doing it.
Of course... I'm still not done with it as I would like to install a P9700 (over the next month or so) and later on, quite possibly an SSD.
As I mentioned earlier - the X9100 I have in my signature (have to edit that) was TOO hot because it had a C0 stepping.
My laptop couldn't keep it cool at all for long and I ended up underclocking it to 2.6GhZ and undervolting (which barely kept the temperatures in 'somewhat' acceptable range).

I will probably keep using my 5930G for another year or so as well.

Its a shame that a Q9100 didn't work though (it REALLY would have helped out in my 3d Studio Max - but I guess a higher clocked C2D such as the P9700 will have to suffice for now - and besides, having more cache helps).

    As for upgrading the RAM...
I got my DDR2-800MhZ 8GB RAM (2x4GB) off e-bay. It cost about $100 with delivery at the time (4GB DDR2 sticks were never really 'cheap' - especially because by the time they became available, the industry was already using same sized DDR3 sticks which became standardized, and of course, due to their limited availability, the sellers seem to have jacked up the prices recently).

This is the cheapest so-dimm DDR2 8GB (800MhZ) I was able to find (well, I skimmed mostly):
    NEW! 8GB (2x4GB) Dell Inspiron 1750 DDR2-800 SODIMM Laptop Memory PC2-6400 | eBay

I would also like to note that 800MhZ speed is not that big of a deal.
The difference between 533MHZ and 800MhZ RAM-wise is not something you will be able to notice in a significant capacity, HOWEVER, if you get the ddr2 8GB RAM with lowest possible timings, that would be preferable (regardless of MhZ).

I see.. many thanks. I noticed that stock RAM are capable to work on 667 MHz and it's the only way to OC the CPU as far as I know. I only once can do so, and my T9600 works on 3.5 GHz, but it soon throw me a BSOD when I tried to play games . SetFSB program helps with that. In other cases I get BSOD right after FSB speed was changed. I don't know what is the reasons behind that.
Yeah DDR2 RAM is expensive, but I think it's a good contribution. And I want to ask, is a DDR2-800 works on 557 MHz too? And the only thing I get it's a 8 GB of RAM? Or it works on 800 Mhz? And what timings are good, 4-4-4-x I guess?

    Hi,

my screen has now got a blue line going down the middle... do you have a link to where you found the details to replace the screen?

I found details on replacing the CCFL backlight with LED's.
    Here:
    LED Backlight Kit Detail Page

A LED kit would cost about $80 (because you get the inverter, and other things) but I think its definitely worth it if you want a brighter screen coupled with lower energy demand and thermal output (still, if you are strapped for cash, then replacing the backlight itself would be cheaper seeing how you can get it for $19 on ebay cheaper or slightly more expensive depending on where you live).

As for replacing the screen itself...
You can get a new screen on ebay as well for about $90.
I would strongly advise you try to pinpoint the problem though (whether its down to the screen itself or just a single component such as the backlight).
