Re: Acer Aspire 5930(G) owner thread
Ok... I re-applied the paste to the GPU/CPU.
At first, the temps were within EZSOLT's range for idle on the cpu... but this could have been attributed to the laptop being off and all - although, as far as I can tell, it would appear that the temps will first start off higher (at 45 , maybe more, then go down to ezsolt levels).
Then I ran the ORTHOS stress test, and after about several minutes, the laptop turned itself off - which was odd to say the least because it ran perfectly fine before.
I wasn't paying attention to the temperatures at the time, but it's possible i need to allow the paste to settle in before doing the stress test - will keep you apprised.
EDIT:
I have an explanation for why the laptop turned itself off.
The TZS0 and TZS1 temps reached 105 degrees C (which is the safety cutoff point).
What do those 2 values stand for?
Is it the Northbridge?
If so... I just tried applying some thermal grease on it and placed a copper coin on top of that (because before it was solely covered with a sticky sticker of some kind - which I hadn't removed) - if that was the Northbridge - I think it was (the CPU like chip which is integrated into the motherboard - comes before the CPU and the heatsink is connected to it).
Now I'm running a stress test, and the TZS0 and TZS1 temps have reached a maximum of 95/97 and 94/96 degrees C (they seem to be roughly 10 degrees if not slightly more above my CPU temps. Although, I really don't understand is why - especially because the northbridge apparently didn't overheat like this before when I did the stress test.
I'll leave it like this for now and run stress tests in the upcoming day or two to see if leaving it be will make a difference (I'm hoping it will).
But these temps are jumping around like mad.
I guess it's possible I'm trying too much too soon. Will leave it off overnight and see what tomorrow brings.
CPU temps were more or less the same like the last time (up to 85 degrees C on full stress - but way too high compared to what EZSOLT is getting).
Ok EZSOLT... what did you do to get 70 degrees C under load temperatures?
Comments and suggestions please - oh and here's a pic to illustrate the difference in temps between the TZS0/1 and CPU0/1: http://i585.photobucket.com/albums/s.../HWMonitor.jpgLast edited by Deks; 20th January 2012 at 02:34 PM.

Re: Acer Aspire 5930(G) owner thread
Hello peeps.
Ok... news report.
I returned to Throttlestop and surprisingly it worked this time around.
I was able to reduce voltage from 1.2V on 11.5 multiplier down to 1.1V (which seems to be a pretty good reduction overall speaking - lower voltages seem to cause a BSOD).
However, while temperatures during ORTHOS stress test (blend) showed reduced temps...
Playing ST Online yielded following results:
82/83/85 degreec C in space combat, then it rose to 90 degrees on a ground mission.
I don't get it.
Either the heatsink is not touching down properly, or the thermal paste was not properly placed, or I don't know what anymore... but reducing the voltage by that much should have produced some results - CPU-Z showed reduction in voltage btw on 11.5 multiplier (1.1V) - but it's as if that in the end, it didn't matter.Last edited by Deks; 21st January 2012 at 07:00 AM.

Re: Acer Aspire 5930(G) owner thread
Here's an update:
It would appear that I was able to solve my temperature issues.

Namely, the paste was horribly applied before.
This time I cleaned out the gpu/cpu and NB, then re-applied the paste by spreading it on all 3 chips cores (gpu, cpu and northbridge) equally (so a thin layer covers the chips cores themselves instead of putting a blop and allowing the heatsink to spread the paste).
Orthos Blend Stress test produced 70/72 degrees C temperatures on the CPU (I ran the test for 26 mins).
I also did Furmark Burn-in test, which apparently held the GPU on 70 degrees C, (cpu load was at 50%)... so I ran Orthos Blend stress test along side it to put 100% strain on the CPU and gpu temps rose to 80 degrees C, while the cpu was at 85 degrees.
Northbridge appeared to be holding at 90 degrees.
Hehe...
I must say that these temps are much better than from what I had before.
They are stable (do NOT go up eventually) and lower from what I was getting before.
Btw, the CPU was undervolted with ThrottleStop by placing the 11.5 multiplier to run at 1.1V (I cannot go lower than that unfortunately).
Though I suppose I could set the 10.5 multiplier and reduce the voltage to 1.075V in total (tried it before).
That would produce a 2.8Ghz speed which should be more than enough for games that might stress the cpu to the max with the gpu (for 3dsMax though, I'll be using the 11.5 multiplier at 1.1V).
I will probably still do the copper shim mod on the cpu and GPU for the sake of it in order to try and reduce the temperatures even more.
Hopefully, the copper shim mod will result in at least 5 degrees lower temps (which would definitely be nice).
Oh and keep in mind I'm running my gpu at 20% OC (on 9700m gt levels).
Idle temps are basically identical to what ezsolt is experiencing.
EDIT:
I played ST: Online for a while today and new (stable) temps are:
CPU: 70 to 72 degrees C
GPU: 70 degrees CLast edited by Deks; 22nd January 2012 at 10:03 AM.

Those temps are good now! Same like mine.

Re: Acer Aspire 5930(G) owner thread
Timings are 6-6-6-18.
I don't really care too much for those.
They don't really do anything for the laptop performance-wise.Acer Aspire 5930G - 15"

Re: Acer Aspire 5930(G) owner thread
Hi Deks.
I see you finally upgraded your 5930G
Congrats.
Well, i finally sold mine 160 euros and bought a used Dell Vostro 3750 to an Austrian on Ebay for 300 euros
with a core I3 2310M on board. Then i bought a quad core i7 2720qm ES 120 euros and replaced the cpu.
I chose the option of buying a notebook without discrete gpu on board to use it with an external gpu. That way no noise no heat issue, no throttling. And i must say it's awesome and completely evolutive.
I won't buy another lap anytime soon

Re: Acer Aspire 5930(G) owner thread
My first post on this so helpfull forum. I read almost all the pages XDD. Thanks to Deks, Kallogan, Rayyan and others for give us so much light onto our Acer 5930G...
I probably have discovered what was happening with the problem that mentioned Deks:
Acer Aspire 5930(G) owner thread
Sometimes the screen refuses to show graphics after cold bootup (or after suspend time) and I had to switch off (with the button or the lid) and on again until it recovered the image.
It doesn't appear to be a cable problem because it only happens on boot time and it recovers almost allways when I switch off/on the computer again, without touching nothing more.
I imagined that it could be a motherboard problem (bad quality components); at boot time the mobo is not giving enough power to the G9600M, refusing to show anything... so I thought "why not reduce the bootup clocks to the G96 to reduce the demanded power?". I tried, changed 2D clocks and bootup clocks (to all the timingsets) to 85/170/80 and it worked like a charm!!

If somebody has the same problem, and moving the cable does not solve anything, try with this. And if you can't see nothing to test the fix, first try to heat the card like in the following video (it will let you boot your computer for a while)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6g-xt...8Dv9RQa47alNBA
In the first part you can see the same pattern in the screen that I was suffering allways that I turned on my lappy, going white after seconds.
I think it worked because the card was very hot, so it automatically reduced itself the boot clocks. I doubt that it worked the next time with a cold boot.
In the other hand, to enlarge battery life I have reduce all the clocks:

and I changed the extra voltage to 0,9V, too. Now it is cooler without loosing performance when I really need it!!
Cheers from Spain (excuse my english).

Re: Acer Aspire 5930(G) owner thread
@Decks,
evening my friend. You seem very knowledgeable and I wanted to ask you something that has got me confused. Recently I decide to buy a ssd for my laptop (of course 5930g) but I cannot decide which one as I am not sure, actually, what I can put on.
The controller is the following: Intel (R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI and though it seems to be sata compatible it is not exactly the same with the controlelers that Intel suggests in their website as sata-compatible.
Then I saw that Intel for example has evolved to SATA III with the models of its 520 line. So I read somewhere that if I place SATA3 ssd the laptop will not fully take advantage of it as it supports up to SATA2 (or 1??). So it will be better if I put staight SATA 2 and although it is older tech it will be faster.
I am sorry if my question poses a self explanatory answer for most people in here
but I am utterly confused.
Could you guys help me a bit or point me to where I can read more??I would appreciate

Re: Acer Aspire 5930(G) owner thread
Does anyone have test drive unlimited 2. I have it on steam and it plays at 23fps-35fps on medium I believe at native res. I was wondering if it weren't for my p7350 what fps you would get. Can anyone test fps and cpu usage. Mine is like 95%

Re: Acer Aspire 5930(G) owner thread
Hi y'all.
First time poster but long time owner of an Acer Aspire 5930G with 3GB DDR2 PC5300, 250GB 5400RPM HD, Intel C2D P7350, GF-9600M-GT 512MB GDDR3, Win Vista SP2 32bit.
I have been using this laptop since 2008 and I'm still very happy with it, but in some games the 2.0GHz CPU seems to loose out a little on performance, so therefore I have thought of upgrading the laptop a bit so it'll run some of the games I play a bit better.
Also the CPU-fan rattles a bit even-though I've cleaned it a dusin of times, so it may need replacement too.
I've been thinking of adding a 2GB PC5300 stick to get 4GB ram total (yes I know it's on a 32bit OS, but still 3.25~3.5 recognized by Vista would be fine.
I've also been thinking of getting CPU (used, new is waaay to much) but I'm not sure what to go after to get a bit performance boost. I've been looking at P8600 and T9400 CPU's ?
As for graphics I'd like to find a GF 9700M-GT, but for 120~140euro used that's a no go, so I'll have to settle with the current GFX.
I've done a little math on eBay.
P8600 goes around €30
2GB memory stick around €25
New CPU fan €7
= €62.
I think that would be fairly acceptable to just give a little performance boost to this old laptop I really love.
