Just bought an AS5315

Hi fellas,
I'm new here and glad there is such a good forum for Acer people. Anyhow, I picked up an Acer Aspire AS5315 for $399 CAD. Wonder what your thoughts are on this laptop?

I did a search here and seems people have heat/auto shutoff problems. I plan on using it just for office apps/web, movies/media. No plans for gaming or graphics/video editing. It seems there is generally negative feedback on Celeron processors but is it really that obsolete compared to a dual core if it's not going to be used for hardcore gaming?

i love my cheap little laptop

the heat/shut down issue is a result of removing VISTA,, installing XP and not upgrading the BIOS...

i suggest you see that your BIOS is upgraded to Ver 1.33 or 1.34 (34 has a few errors thought)

but these laptops are very easy to upgrade,,, infact there are people with the T8300 CPU installed in this model... i went cheap and installed the T5450

The backlash against single core processor computers now is that all the new applications are going to be (or at least should) be developed to support multi-core processors. This means that while before opening a word document was the same on a 2ghz single core and a 2ghz dual core, now the dual core is much faster in opening and running. Plus at only 1 gig of ram and with such a simple processor, that computer will run vista far slower than a more modern machine. If all you want is the most basic of computers then that will do it but it is really behind on all fronts as far as technology goes. I guess it's new and has a warranty of some kind but still, don't even expect amazing performance for basic tasks.
