Default Re: Aspire 5315 CPU UPGRAGE step-by-step guide

i have upgraded my CPU to the T5450 or any socketP UP TO the T7500 CPU should work fine... 2 users have reported back to me on the success of his T7500 upgrade... the CPU will work and the GM965chipset will support the 800Mhz FSB... SO GO BIG OR GO CHEAP is my advice,, each has it's pro's and con's

on the 5315, a cpu upgrade is very easy..

1. unplug power, remove battery,, and press power button to drain any residual power held by capasitors.

2. remove 4 screws (one at a time) from the bottom access pannel (large funny shaped pannel w/ circular fan hole).

3. w/ screws removed use small screwdriver to help prise the pannel up, (it takes some force to remove the pannel, just go slow and steady).

4. after pannel removal, locate the FAN.. remove the 3 screws from the fan, unplug fan power cable, then remove the fan.

5. now unscrew the 4 screws from above the CPU (they have springs between the screw heads and the cpu heatsink.

6. now w/ screws removed, lift the heatsink up off the CPU and remove the heat-sink assembly... it goes all the way to the fins that are in back of the fan...

7. with the heatsink assembly removed, you should see the CPU... socket color is not an issue and no modification is needed... sorry for any confusion

8. turn the screw at the top of the cpu socket. that should release the pressure on the CPU,, and now you should be able to lift the CPU out of the scoket.

9. place the new cpu in the socket, MAKE SURE IT IS FRIMLY SEATED w/ no gap between pins cpu and socket... then turn screw back to lock CPU in place..

10. re assemble the rest of the components in reverse order to re assemble.. (heatsink assembly, (screw it back in,, fan assembly- screw it back and hook up power,, replace back cover and replace screws.)

that should do it for you...

before doing all of this make sure you have updated your bios version to atleast version 1.31,, i'm using 1.43 w/ no problems,,

currently version 1.34 has caused sporadic COOL BOOT problems on certain machines,,,ver 1.42 had some issues with NETWORK not resuming after pc comes out of hibernate... Many BIOS versions can be forund at support.acer-euro.com READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND THEN run the flasher of your choice (windows flash,,, or DOS which requires you to make a bootable CD w/ flash files on it)

bios update to 1.34?
7720G BIOS v1.34 "little" issue

i personally have flashed my 5315 BIOS's (3 pcs) a total of over 50 times with no problems using WINFLASH

but on 7-25-08 i did get report of WINFLASH hanging durring verification step, when user killed all power it also killed his BIOS and maybe MORE... (lesson::: DO NOT REMOVE AC & BATTERY while PC is powered up, even if it seems locked up)

Hi bigozone - I have searched threads and can't find any that describe the mods to make to CPU to fit a grey socket on an Acer Aspire 4315. I have a GM965 chipset and have upgraded the bios to the most recent version in readiness.

I have an upgrade CPU on the way and took my laptop apart to check and I might have known a grey socket!!!! You seem to be the person who knows about this - can you let me have the information please? I'm new here and hope this is the correct method of contact. I have set my account so I can receive emails from others so I hope this works. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
