The limitation is 2TB for Windows users, as the 5315 doesn't have a 64-bit UEFI. (Black Edition can only unlock 32-bit.) Might be circumventable using EDK-DUET (an EFI-emulating bootloader). Possibly 4K-sectored drives can go higher still.

For Linux and other OSes, HDD size is virtually unlimited.

    Hi All,

Love this website, some really helpful guides such as this one!

I wonder if I could get a second opinion on what I am going to do with my Acer 5315, following research I am going to upgrade the Ram to 4GB (with 64 bit OS) the harddrive to possibly 320GB, and the Processor to the T8300

Here are some links to the hardware I am going to get for this, just want to make absolutely sure that they are the right parts, and that I shouldnt run in to any problems?

unless you really need the hd storage space Danniboy you should be looking to install an ssd

a 120GB plus ssd like the crucial M4 or the OCZ's agility 3 should be able to saturate the 5315's data bus, but most importantly will make the laptop fly!

i would NOT recomend the agilty 3
why? there are known for failure.
not all of them, still a lot more then the non ocz ssd's (20% vs 2%)

and furtermore: they do not meet the speeds on the package:there is no such thing as 550 mb/s nor 300.

the crucial m4 is an excelent choise though,
if u have sata 6 u can reach nice transfer rates, dont be dissapointed by sata 2 like in the 5315.
is the 4k that makes an ssd fast not sequential.

here an crucial m4 on a sata2 port

4GB of RAM won't work, unofficially 5315 support up to 3GB in a specific stick/slot combo

    Hey guys,

Thanks for your advice about the SSD drives - wasnt sure that it would work on this laptop but if you are certain this will work, I will DEFO look in to this, would be a brilliant speed upgrade - plus size isnt much of an issue, so long as its bigger than its original 80GB harddrive lol!

I have recently received and installed the t8300 that I linked to above, bought that exact one - it worked at first, however when I rebooted it then didnt boot up it had a black screen and wasnt going any further - I had to revert back to the old celeron and it worked fine again.

Wondered if this was an overheating issue as I cannot for the life of me think of any other reason why.

I have since returned this CPU to the supplier and will hopefully be entitled to a replacement - one of the corner pins was (very slightly) bent, which I was able to rectify easily, but also on the top half there was a scratch (although very small) on the PCB board, however I looked past this in the hopes it would not be an issue.

It is very possible that the minor damage was related to its failiure - but wondered, does this laptop even have the feature to power down if it overheats, and if it did overheat, would a black screen on boot up be the result of an overheated CPU?

I have installed plenty of CPU's previously, and applied around a grain of rice size of thermal paste spread across the chip accordingly.

    any thoughts would be appreciated,

I am hopefully going to get a replacement of the T8300 soon and will try it again then, but dont want a repeat fail

Sorry to hear about your cpu problems, I would run a mile from a cpu showing any sign of physical damage.

Re: overheating, you can stress test you cpu using software like OCCT (available here http://www.ocbase.com/). It monitors temperatures and cuts the test in the event of overheating. The Intel cpus have extremely good thermal management built in as well, they automatically slow down (downclock) to protect themselves in the event of overheating. Occt will stop a test before it gets to that point. I appreciate if the cpu isn't booting you'll not need OCCT.

Finally, on SSDs, rather than your thread being hijacked by a discussion on the merits of various ssds, here is a good resource you can use, The SSD Review. The latest generation of SSDs are overkill for a 5315, the previous generation, like the ones referred to before, will make the it seem incredibly fast and they are being nicely discounted now.

    Hey guys,

So I opted for the crucial M4 in the end, and cant wait to give it a try - wasnt going to do that at first due to budget constraints, but selling the spare harddrive on ebay will make that possible

its a shame it wont take the extra gig to bring it to 4gb of RAM, i had read conflicting stories about whether or not it works... so unless theres ANYTHING else that I can do to make it work, ill have to stick with the 3GB i guess (Bios is version 1.43 btw)

with regards to that OCCT software - I have tried that out and it looks brilliant, really handy peice of software, and will defo give that a try - I wonder though has anyone actually had any heating issues with the T8300 cos i have not found anyone that has - I am 90% sure that the minor damage I saw on the chip was to blame..

HOWEVER... answer me this... isnt it odd that the first boot ups of windows xp, worked perfectly fine after I installed the T8300, rebooted 2 or 3 times I believe and no issues.

Curiously it was only when I put my windows 7 ultimate CD in and rebooted to begin installing that, that it then didnt go past POST - perhaps the cd drive going pushed it one step too far?! it seems a weird coincidence doesnt it?? lol

I dont actually think me trying to have windows 7 had anything to do with it.. its just weird that it happened right after I was about to begin with that...

Anyway, what do you guys think? have you heard of a cpu working fine a couple of times then dieing - would a minor scratch cause this??

Got a replacement on the way thankfully, not to mention the highly anticipated SSD - so will be continueing with the overhall next week
