if you cannot get a BIOS SCREEN or any screen response at all,, then you need to solve that problem before investing in a CPU for a PC that isn't even working...

and the SERVICE GUIDE IS LINKED ON PAGE 1!

i recommend fixing the PC before getting all upgrade happy..
what good is a better CPU if the motherboard is screwd or the BIOS is trashed... it sounds to me like your BIOS is corrupted or WORSE

search using the NBR Forum Search below..

Ohh, the BIOS is screwed up....The mate up there can try shorting the jumper or do a BIOS upgrade the old fashion way, using a floppy drive..!!
If it is totally screwed and won't POST, then there is a way - in which one would need another motherboard and use it to do something to do the BIOS..!! I have read about it, can't remember..!!
If the problem is not with the motherboard, (you can check all parts wit a voltmeter) - then you can replace the BIOS chip also, and get a new one either from Acer or BIOSMAN....

    My laptop:
    Acer Aspire 3683WXMi: Celeron M430 1,73GHz 1MB Cache, 2GB DDR2 RAM, 160GB HDD, Bluetooth 2.0EDR, 7200mAh 9-cell battery, Vista Home Premium

    Upgrade:
Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2080 2x1,73GHz 1MB Cache (OEM Core Duo with half of cache memory).

    Effects:
    - can play Doom 3 with GMA950 at medium Q 640x480
    - Vista start about 40 sec (with some autostarts apps - not new installation)
    - battery time 3-5h (Celeron 2-3h)
    - silence
    - cost: 35$

Celeron - low performance, med energy save, hi temp, very low price
Core 2 Duo - hi performance, good energy save, low temp, med price
Core Duo/Pentium Dual-Core - hi performance (20% worse than C2D), very good energy save (about 20% better than C2D), low temp, low price

so.... C2D for very good speed and good battery time and CD/PDC for good speed and better battery time AND low price...
    i chose battery time

    sorry for my english

    my thoughts,

    new laptops attract more chicks!!!
new platforms are gonna have a longer life than upgrading a socket M to it's last possible CPU

but in the end i guess it all comes down to money and what the PC will be doing

hope my lack of wisdom helped
