Re: Notebook Coolers : A Buyers Guide
Hello, quertiy,
I added a Noctua NF-S12B FLX x 120mm SCD-2 fan (retail package) to the upper right corner of my Cooler Master U2 stand. I would have preferred the U3 Cooler Master; it was not in stock at Micro Center and U2 was on sale.
I'm using a 120v-to-12-volt (and 5 volt, too) power supply on hand. It is designed for powering an unmounted SATA drive through a 4-pin Molex connector. Running directly from the Molex connector, the NF-S12B makes relatively little noise. You can elect to use one of the supplied adapters (white or black) to reduce fan noise even more.
To avoid the cooling fans going off each time my M6600 hibernates, I also use a 120-volt USB battery charger to power the existing 80 mm fans on the U2. I expect to upgrade these to Noctua fans eventually--when the bearings on the Cooler Master fans become noisy.
A 120 mm fans just fits along the raised portion of the U2 cooling surface. (U3 would handle two--one in each upper corner). You won't be able to accommodate 80mm or 120 mm standard-thickness fans on the cooling surface near the lower edge.
I am still experimenting to find an optimal Noctua position for keeping the internal Dell CPU fan spinning simultaneously.

Re: Notebook Coolers : A Buyers Guide
I have a couple questions:
1) Does the battery in the m17x r3 suffer from the heat of the laptop? Because the battery is in the front and any heat I feel is always closer to the back. I've never felt heat around the battery area. So does the heat even reach the battery?
2) What's the best laptop cooler meant to be used in a lap?

Re: Notebook Coolers : A Buyers Guide
The search is not working for me at all so I apologize if this has been asked.
I am about to trade my desktop plus some cash to a buddy with a nicely specced m18x:
- Red
- i7 2960xm OC'd 3.8GHz
- 16GB 4x4GB 1866MHz Corsair Vengeance RAM
- 2x WD Blue 1TB Drives Raid 0
- Optical bay Modded as 240GB Intel 520 SSD Boot Drive
- Xfire Radeon 6990m GPU's
- Killer Wireless N 1103
I figure it can do all the duties of my desktop and function as a lan box and even go on battery and be portable a couple hours at a time if need be.
Since this is mainly going to sit at home and be a desktop I think a good notebook cooler that it can always sit on would be a good investment to not only increase oc and have better turbo headroom but also to prolong the life of the components and maybe go for some gpu oc's if possible.
What notebook cooler has the best alignment and performance for this notebook?

Re: Notebook Coolers : A Buyers Guide
Hey guys I have been using a rosewill for my laptop, but it doesn't seem to be cooling my laptop, but not i see why after reading this thread =P. So i was wondering if you guys could help me find a good cooler for my laptop, because whenever I play d3 it gets really hot and CPU temps hit ~60-70 degrees celcius.
1) Budget --> ~50 - 80?
2) Is noise an issue for you? Are you annoyed but noticeable noise?
Noise isnt that big of a deal.
3) Post a picture of the under side of your notebook along with basic measurements like shown earlier in this guide. (just link to a previous post if your notebook has been posted before)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
4) Do you have a color preference?
No preference in color
5) Any brands you would like to avoid?
No preference in brand.

Re: Notebook Coolers : A Buyers Guide
Hi All,
this would be my first post here, so please let me know if im doing something wrong. Just to put it out there, i am very new to laptop and Alienware. first one for both lol. (iv always owned desktops)
i recently bought a M14X and have some questions. my main question is regarding cooling pad, so i decided to post here.
Q#1.)
I have done some research, it seems a lot of people like the Cool Master U2 and i am really leaning towards buying that, but just want to check here first if anyone knows of a better option.
My budget is ok with anything under $100, no color or brand preference, noise is no issue for me as long as it is not over like ~ 30 db. I am sure everyone here knows what the bottom of M14X looks like so i don't think picture is necessary.
Q#2.)
This question would be for people who play long hours of gaming everyday on their laptop if anyone does......
Is it bad or harm the laptop to play league of legends continuously on the M14X Monday - Friday for like 3-5 hours a day and weekends like 5-6 hours a day ?
Would my hdd, cpu, or gpu overheat and break with in like a year ?
I know it is hard to give answer to such specific question, but i am just giving you guys my daily usage at the most and see if i need to cut down on gaming
Q#3.)
kind of a silly question, but does a R1 looks (literally) any different than a R2 ? lol
Thanks so much for any input,
again i am new to this forum so please let me know if i am doing anything wrong.
FYI, here is my system spec.
Alienware M14X:
intel I7 2670
GT555M
500GB HDD
8 gb RAM

Re: Notebook Coolers : A Buyers Guide
In another thread the Cooler Master Storm SF 19 was rec'd for the P170EM over the Notepal U3.
I searched the forums and couldn't find much feedback about this cooler. Anyone have any thoughts about it? Or rec something else for the P170em?
I want something with more power than a simple USB powered cooler.
height x width x depth (in mm): 55 x 412 x 276

1) Budget
Less than $100
2) Is noise an issue for you? Are you annoyed but noticeable noise?
Only if it's constant. If I am playing a game and I need to crank it up I expect the fans to make noise. As long as I can turn them down when they're not needed I'm ok with noise sometimes.
3) Post a picture of the under side of your notebook along with basic measurements like shown earlier in this guide. (just link to a previous post if your notebook has been posted before)
Picture above, I don't have it yet, so i can't make measurements.
4) Do you have a color preference?
No
5) Any brands you would like to avoid?
NoOwn: Sony F11 | i7-720QM | 6gb 1333 | 500gb 5400rpm | BD-R/DVD-RW | NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 1gb | crap | total crap
Ordered: P170EM | i7-3270QM | 12gb 1600 | 120gb Intel 520 SATA III | 750gb 7200 | BD-RW | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M |
