You are probably less likely to break it with an external drive. It will be less convenient, but if you are not moving it much, its probably the safer route. Whether you want to try is up to you. I did not find it that hard, but I got lucky because the drives were the same size. My Thinkpad was a different story. They use a super slim drive which I could not find. I would have had to swap or reshape to make it fit since they have the eject button in the lower corner. My Thinkpad does boot from the external LiteON DVD burner I bought. You have to find out if your BIOS supports booting from a USB device. Check the boot order in BIOS. If you see USB device, it probably does. You may have to change the boot order though. Good Luck.
